Question from a newbie

Hi there,

I'm waiting for results from FTDNA (Family Finder and 37 Marker) and in the meantime wondering what better informed people can tell from the existing 12 marker test? Not much? Would anyone hazard a guess. I think the M269 on file is 'predicted' at the moment until test results come back.

DYS390 = 24
DYS19 = 15
DYS391 = 11
DYS385 = 11-14
DYS426 = 12
DYS388 = 12
DYS439 = 12
DYS389I = 13
DYS392 = 13
DYS389II = 29

My genealogy is from Lancashire (Wigan) UK and I'm probably not Viking as they were in the West of the County. My family name is Anglo-Saxon in origin. Any ideas?

With Whit Athey's Y haplogroup Predictor (http://www.hprg.com/hapest5/hapest5a/hapest5.htm) you get a fitness score of 83 for R1b, and the probability of that being your y haplogroup is said to be 100%. However, your second place fitness score is 43 for R1a, and that remains a possibility, given your 15 at DYS19. You are most likely R1b, but there is a chance you could be R1a.

You need more markers and a SNP test. When all 37 of your markers come in, we will know with greater certainty.

May I ask the significance of DYS19=15? is this something about Iberian ancestry or Sephardic both of which are fine with me.

No, it's just more common in R1a than R1b, but it's common enough in R1b.
