Halloween is almost here. So let's do a bat thread.

Well, it's a start, even if northwest bats are small.

Recollection: I still remember seeing rather large bats slowly flying back and forth behind the TV evening news reporter in Iraq, as Bagdad was being obliterated by the American "shock and awe" attack. Moral: Regardless of what humans are doing to each other, those Iraqi bats are thriving just the same, ha ha.

There's been a big decline in the little brown myotis populations in my area because of a fungal infection. It's too bad since they eat a lot of mosquitoes.

I had read about a year or so ago about how people 'spelunking' I think that is what it is called when they go to visit caves as a sport? The people traveling from cave to cave spread disease, I think fungal among various bat colonies, wiping many out. Quite sad.

Some years ago when I lived out in the country, I put one of those bat houses way up near the top of my storage shed to attract bats.

I like to watch them when they come out at about dusk in the summer time and go after bugs.
