New Version V2
Improvements included. Thanks for the suggestions.
Please note: this image is not for personal lineage (clan) research. Please do not complain if you can not see your haplogroup/SNP. Times are from YFull, look there for more details: http://www.yfull.com/tree/J2/

I find it interesting that you designated M92 as East Mediterranean. Among which populations is it found in high frequencies?

I look at the diversity: sample origins of the early subclades under M92. Frequency is not a good origin indicator for haplogroups older then 3,000 years in the Middle East IMHO (exception: most of Caucasus).
I see the major M92 diversity in western Fertile Crescent as well as Anatolia and Italy. Many European samples exist. Only a few from eastern Middle East / Asia. https://www.familytreedna.com/public/J2-M172?iframe=ymap
So the hypothesis is not solid without many more Y-sequences from all of Middle East.

I was just reconsidering this graph to establish the oldest paragroups (earliest splits with unknown subhaplogroups). Those have been receiving data or are still lacking at least two NGS samples:

J2a-PF5125,PF5116 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-PF5116/)(xZ2227,Z2229,PF5119) TMRCA ca. 16400 years, one BigY available, one distant J2-SNP-Pack result
J2a-Z6064 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-Z6064/)(xZ6063) TMRCA ca. 15800 years, three BigY and one Hallast et al 2014 available
J2a-PF5172 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-PF5172/)(xPF5169) TMRCA ca. 14300 years, two BigY and one Hallast et al 2014 available
J2b1-Z575,Z1825 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-Z1825/)(xM241) TMRCA ca. 14000 years, two BigY, one 1000-Genome and one PGP available
J2a2-PF5050,PF5008 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-PF5008/)(xPF5058) TMRCA ca. 13700 years, one 1000-Genome available, one J2-SNP-Pack result

I made a small update to v3.2: minor adjustments and L198 corrected to L192.
DOI publication since I probably will not update this version anymore and instead create a new one based on a newer YTree version:

I posted this in another thread and figured I would re-post here since this is probably the more appropriate thread.

So I recently received my results from 23andMe and it spit out my paternal haplogroup as "J2a1b1*". Is that the same thing as J-M92? Or is only J2a1b1 without the asterisk J-M92 and J2a1b1 with an * is something altogether different? I can trace my father's line to the 1780s (when the paper trail starts) and, per the paper trail, they were all Ashkenazi Jews from, what today is, the very western part of Czech Republic, bordering Germany. I have read that the J-M92 subclade is found among Ashkenazi so, I guess, the group assignment would make sense. I have no idea if I am part of the L556 group, as I have not idea how to read the raw DNA data from 23andMe but, I suspect, it is a possibility. It certainly would corroborate the paper trail.

Trying to make an update on the oldest and rare/interesting J2 haplogroups:

J2a2-PF5050,PF5008 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-PF5008/)(xPF5058,L581) formed 17800 ybp, TMRCA 16100 ybp, one 1000-Genome available, one J2-SNP-Pack result
J2a-PF5125,PF5116 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-PF5116/)(xZ2227,Z2229,PF5119) formed 15500 ybp, two BigY uploaded to YFull, TMRCA 12300 ybp
J2a-Z6064 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-Z6064/)(xZ6063,Z6055) formed 15700 ybp, three samples @YFull and one Hallast et al 2014, TMRCA 11500 ybp
J2a-Z2222,PF5160 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-PF5160/)(xL24,PF5197) formed 15500 ybp, one J2-SNP-Pack result
J2b-M102 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-M102/)(xZ534) formed 15100 ybp, one unpaid YFull sample
J2b-Z575,Z1825 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-Z1825/)(xM241) formed 15100 ybp, TMRCA 13400 ybp, three subclades with each 2+ kits
J2a-Z7430,FGC23952/Y8998 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-PF5197/)(xZ7403,YSC0000253) formed 13700 ybp, low-res Stoneking, Lippold et al 2014 sample and possibly one J2-STR67 result
J2a-PF5172 (https://www.yfull.com/tree/J-PF5172/)(xZ7314) formed 12800 ybp, three samples @YFull and one Hallast et al 2014, TMRCA 4000 ybp

Interesting kits by Hunter P.:

my predictions for some of these interesting Z2453 samples based on computing GDs to ancestral STRs I derived for each subclade, only looking at 20 stable markers useful for differentiating Z2453. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oZr4tz3g7Z5C8WIyiYNp1yiiM5Y07n9i/view?usp=sharing - So only two look definitively basal Z2453 to me but all five may split 13,000 year old clades.
