View Full Version : Student Conducting Allergy Research

To Whom It May Concern:

I have extremely severe allergies to cashews, pistachios, and papayas, and milder allergies to avocados and cats. As a result, I have always been very curious about allergies, and I have conducted multiple projects investigating them. This year, I am conducting a private independent science fair project on correlations between genetic mutations and allergies (specifically, food allergies). I have reached out to numerous institutions, but no one has been able to provide me with genetic data and allergies for the same people. I cannot use a public online genetic database because I do not know these people's allergies.

I have also reached out to the 23andMe community in hopes that some would be willing to share specific raw genetic data (all of which are sequenced by 23andMe and are always accessible in the "explore my raw data" tab), allergies, and gender. So far, I have received 15 sets of data. I would like more in order to increase the accuracy of my results (by analyzing a larger sample size). All display and use of data is completely anonymous, and subjects will be represented as Person 1, Person 2, etc.

I am reaching out to the Anthrogenica community in hopes that some of you have used genomic testing and are willing to share your genotypes for the SNPs listed below and your allergies (if you have any). If you have a 23andMe account, you can also view this post at https://www.23andme.com/you/community/thread/41626/ and compile your data either by copying/taking a screenshot of the results that show up when you enter the genes (below) in the "browse-raw-data" tab or typing the genotypes for each SNP listed below. According to a few people who have sent me data, this only took them 10 minutes.

From reading numerous scientific publications, I know that this study may not yield the most accurate results because I'm not factoring in any epigenetic/environmental influences. However, I am accounting for that as a source of error, and I plan to include it for future research.

To summarize -- I would need a list of your gender, allergies (if applicable), and genotypes for the SNPs of the genes I am looking at (please see below). If you would be willing to participate in this or have any questions, please email double.a123@aatresh.net or send me a message on Anthrogenica.

I really appreciate your time. Thank you very much!

Sincerely,

Aishani Aatresh

Interesting! I am allergic to peanuts, tree nuts and slightly also to soy and peas. I will look up these SNPs and report my results soon.

I'm allergic to tons of things and would really like to help out but I was tested with FTDNA so I'll probably be missing quite a lot of thesw snps in my raw data.

@psaglav No worries at all--you can send me the genotypes for whatever SNPs you have.

Thank you very much!

Hello & happy new year!

I'd just like to throw out there - if there's anyone else who'd be willing to send me data, I'd really appreciate it. I'm still looking for data from people with and without allergies, and I'm more than happy to take data even if you do not have genotypes for all the SNPs I have listed out.

If you have any questions, please email me at double.a123@aatresh.net or reply to this thread. I am currently unable to reply to private messages on Anthrogenica since I don't have 10 posts yet.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate it.

Both me and my brother (we're twins) became allergic to cherries a couple of years ago, at the exact same time. After conducting all necessary tests, the diagnostic was pretty negative: Even the tiniest amounts will suffice to kill both of us (licking our fingers after touching a cherry for example). The strange part is that roughly one and a half year ago, I personally met a half-Jewish half-WASP person (from Seattle I think) who had the very same allergy and found out about it in similar circumstances.
I'm also allergic to cats, dogs and pollen but this cherry allergy is by far the most brutal one I'm subjected to (to make things worse, cherries are my favourite fruit).

I'm allergic to shellfish and related foods, my doctor also warned me that I most likely was allergic to bee sting and prescribed mini cortisone shots just in case. I don't really carry them around, though. I have had chronic atypical urticaria for the last 15+ years and I also have allergic rhinitis. Also allergic asthma. It gets boring listing them all. :)

Another thing related to the immune system, I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, in which my body thinks my thyroid is a foreign object and produces antibodies to fight it.

I'll try to post more later, my eyes are getting runny from the numbers.

I once got an allergic attack eating a whole kiwi and had to go to the hospital (anaphylaxis). Interestingly my aunt developed the same allergy around the same time. I didn't eat kiwis for years but after 10 years or so (estimate), I tried a tiny bit of kiwi: nothing. Now I have no allergies.

Haha, my brother and I also ended up in the hospital after eating cherries, nearly died. That's how we discovered we were allergic :)

Sorry to hear that. :( It is very scary. The first allergy attack I got, I thought I was surely dying.

I am allergic to a variety of seafoods including prawns ,crabs etc . I also got allergic once eating something which was made with goats blood . I also used to get severe skin allergies from mosquito bites .

I probably got too much of a good thing; my problem is an over-active (and faulty) immune system. :P

Crap. I had similar but less severe episode. I once ate one of those health bars with cashew nuts. I seem strongly allergic to them. My insides were burning. I could only lie on the bed, the time i wasn't puking out small partially digested bits. I had to scream at my sister(who is a pharmacist), to get me some cortisone tablets. It really feelt like something was hemorrhaging my stomuch. I had to wait 5 days, before I could eat anything solid again. It was like getting a charley horse in the stomuch

Thank you very much to everyone for all these responses! I really appreciate it.

J Man - I have never seen that article, and it's certainly very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you psaglav for the first set of SNPs (and I'm sorry about the slightly tedious process...).

To everyone who has posted about their allergies - I'm very sorry about your allergies. Some of the stories on here are quite scary. It seems I've been allergic to cashews and pistachios at least as young as 6 months old, but we only diagnosed it when I was 7. Originally, my mouth would just swell, my stomach would hurt, and I would throw up. That was my reaction, and I was good to go as soon as my stomach was emptied :). Now, the same symptoms occur, but recently, my throat has been constricting and it was a bit harder to breathe; and I have no appetite and feel completely out of it for a week afterwards. So thankfully, my allergies are not life-threatening, but they're unfortunately getting worse. As for avocado, that's much milder (I usually don't throw up). I've outgrown my cat allergy. I've developed a papaya allergy over the past few years, and that allergy is as bad as pistachio and cashew.

As a side note, Agamemnon - I have a friend who has the exact same allergies that you have. It's interesting to see that allergies usually appear in groups because of cross-reactivity and all that good stuff that comes with an overractive immune system :).

Thank you very much to everyone who has replied! I'd really appreciate it if you could send over your genetic data when you get a chance.

Anyway, here are the results. As a tip: it's much more convenient to download the raw data, copy the data to Excel and search for the values with the VLOOKUP function.

Also, in case anybody was wondering -- I am more than happy to receive data as late as February 6th (though by January 31st would be optimal).

Thank you very much!

Hi,

Apologies for bothering you with this.

By any chance, could you please consider sending over your genetic data for the SNPs I listed (if you have it)? You can do this through a private message on Anthrogenica/23andMe, a post on this thread, or an email to me (double.a123@aatresh.net). I'm more than happy to accept data even if you are not genotyped for every single SNP.

Thank you very much!
