For African Americans, it is expected that our heritage lies in West Africa for the most part, since this is where a majority of the slaves imported to the US were grabbed from. Many Ancestry DNA tests reflect that. However in my case, it seems to be an almost even split between West African and Central/Southeast African results.

Obviously the results of Ghana/Ivory Coast account for my West African heritage, with a whopping 36%.

Then, Cameroon/Congo and Southeastern Bantu comes in for a combined total of 33% for my Central/South African heritage.

Everything else listed was "trace regions" from that point on, so I'll exclude those for now.

Here is a map of central/south/east Africa.

Ancestry considers Congo/Cameroon to be an inclusion of:
Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Republic of Congo (also found in Angola, Chad)

Ancestry considers Southeastern Bantu to be an inclusion of:
South Africa, Kenya, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Angola, Tanzania, Mozambique, Uganda

As you can see, the last two results in my ethnicity breakdown is a very smooth transition between these regions, making it safe to assume that they signify a combined heritage. (Considering the fact that DNa does not respect man made geographical borders).

People always tell myself and my siblings that we have a different look to us. Many people assume we are Caribbean, or Dominican, or Native, etc. But South/East Africa has some of the most diversity one can find when it comes to looks and ethnicities, etc. Such as the Khoisans, etc. Cool to know where our different looks come from -- the Motherland.

Angolan and Congolese ancestry makes up a large portion of New World black ancestry actually!

Angolan and Congolese ancestry makes up a large portion of New World black ancestry actually!

That is true, but I've shown significant scores of Khoisan ancestry on GEDMatch, 6.58% .
Which is quite significant. The average African American has 0.30% Khoisan ancestry.
Khoisans are a very unique set of humans, mainly positioned in southern Africa.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khoisan

Scored 6% for White Nile River as well....which runs along Ethiopia, South Sudan and Sudan.
Also scored for Omotic as well, consistently no less than 1%.
This is also located further east into Africa.

Hi Herb, I started a thread called "Echoes of the East-African Slave Trade" (http://www.anthrogenica.com/showthread.php?6465-Echoes-of-the-East-African-Slave-Trade-Distant-Diasporic-Matches-IBS-or-IBD) regarding distant matches my family and other East-Africans found in the Americas -- there's been a considerable amount of contribution from other users. I hope it answers some of your questions regarding your reported East-African ancestry.
