View Full Version : Meet the Karelian EHG

I remember a thread where we debated which of the reconstructions of Karelian hunters by Gerasimov is the one with R1a.

The answer is: none of the two.

The one with R1a died as a teenage boy, and there is no reconstruction of his face (AFAIK), but there exist photos of his skull:

Photos show the skull of a Mesolithic Karelian with R1a Y-DNA and C1g or C1f mtDNA (collection number: 5773-74):

MAE RAS collection number: 5773-74 Grave number: 142 (sample UzOO74) (https://www.oagr.org.au/source/I0061/)

You are wrong.

The caption (in Russian language) below the picture you have posted, says that these are photographs of two different female skulls (nr.5773-74)

No, Russian antropologists were wrong to classify that as a female skull... :)

Genetically, "she" turned out to be a male. ;) And this is the EHG with R1a.

Two different skulls ??? No... This is the same skull, it is clear when you look at it.

If these are two different skulls, why are there three photos instead of 2, 4 or 6 ?

Ok, i see. Still, the caption says so "Фотографии женских черепов" [photographs of female skulls, i.e in plural)

That's strange, maybe just a typo.

That's not a typo. The picture is taken from the following pdf file: http://www.kunstkamera.ru/files/lib/mae_xix/mae_xix_06.pdf , page 118. The caption says "Table XXIV, Photos of female skulls, a) collection number 5773-74". On the page 119 one can see another skull and the caption "Table XXIV, continued, b) collection number 5773-118"
