View Full Version : Kurd Genetics using Formal Stats
This thread is devoted to attempting to identify genetic contributions of various populations to the genetic makeup of some Kurds via formal methods.
1- Increased Andronovo Affinity:
First, I try to gauge steppe (Andronovo) affinity by comparing some Iraqi Kurds, and one N Turkish Kurd (Znertu) to some of their eastern, western, southern, and northern neighbors, and to SC Asians. These dstats surprisingly show that those Kurd samples display more steppe affinity than all their neighbors, which indicates that Andronovo related ancestry was transmitted to these Kurds by groups more related to Andronovo than their immediate neighbors.
The question then becomes which groups. To attempt to answer this I will have to measure the Kurd sample affinity to other ancestral components, for example WHG, or E Asian, because it is expected that the population that transmitted the extra Andronovo related ancestry would have transmitted other ancestral components to them as well, and likely with similar ratios.
The following dstats show the Kurds significantly more Andronovo shifted than Syrians, Iranians, and Baloch

Here I try to get an idea of the amount of Andronovo in Kurds using qpAdm. Caution is needed here, because if I choose an admixing source population that itself carries substantial Andronovo, then the amount of Andronovo shown for Kurds will be underestimated. For example, Baloch and Brahui as source populations give great fits for Kurds, but because they are so Kurd like, my result looks like Kurd = 90% Balochi or Brahui + Y + Z, and if Andronovo is sample Y or Z, its amount will be underestimated, because it is included in Balochi.
To get started, I used Syrians, Andronovo, and Paniya for source populations, realizing that Andronovo estimate will be reduced by the amount of Andronovo in Syrians or Paniya (hopefully not much).

The exception was that Armenians and Georgians had more shared drift with CHG than Kurds, although the stat was not significant in the case of Znertu, Arbogan, and Kurd C2, with regards to Armenians.

3- Increased Dai Affinity
The following stats show Kurd shared drift with SE Asian Dai. I have included Jesus and DMXX in the analysis, since it is well established that Azeris and Iranians form a near clade with Kurds, and in some cases, especially in the case of Azeris, indistinguishable from Kurds. This can be seen in the tables as Jesus and DMXX are "sandwiched" between various Kurd samples.
The 1st comparisons against Syrians and BedouinB show all Kurds/Iranian samples more Dai shifted than Syrians and BedouinB. The tables are sorted with samples with the greatest shift towards Dai on top.

Next, I compare the Dai shift of the samples vs Caucausus groups such as Armenians and Georgians. Here it gets a little more interesting. Some Kurd/Iranian samples show more Dai shift vs Caucausus, others show almost neutral shift, and yet others show less Dai shift.
I have color coded, with the ones showing more Dai shift vs Caucausus shown in yellow, ones with somewhat insignificant shift in green, and ones with less Dai shift in blue (bottom). The - sign indicates more Dai shift, in some cases insignificantly so, and the + sign shows less Dai shift.

The following set show Dai shift vs Iranians, Baloch, and Pashtuns.
With Iranians, most of the Iraqi Kurd and SE Kurd samples show more Dai shift. DMXX, Znertu, and Arbogan, show more shift, although insignificantly so. Zarafshan (Iranian Baloch), Kurd C1, and Kurds N, show less Dai shift, although insignificantly so. Jesus shows less Dai shift than Iranians.
With Pakistani Baloch, only the Kurd SE samples show more Dai shift than them. This is likely due to the increased ASI admixture in Pakistani Baloch. Iraqi Kurds C2 and C3 are sort of borderline, in that they show very slightly less Dai shift than Baloch. The remaining samples shaded blue show less Dai shift.
With Pashtuns, all the samples, except for the Kurd SE samples (borderline), show less Dai shift than Pashtuns.

I don't have any such samples, but I can't imagine they would be much different than Znertu, who I believe is a Kurd from NE Turkey

Great work Kurd. Zara, Arbogan and myself are getting similar results which makes total sense since south eastern and south western Iran lack Turko Mongol admixture. The Papuan was kinda surprising, I expected that myself and Zara(IR baloch) would be closer to Papuans than other iranians/kurds.

Thanks, I am also surprised by some of the Dstats, which tend to ignore recent drift, and focus on the length of the drift path to the point of split of the left and right pops. With the Papuan stat, I noticed that shared E Eurasian drift with Papuans is making the score more favorable.
I also would like to mention that some shared drift as indicated by Dstats does not automatically translate into an admixture event. Dstats have to be confirmed with f3 stats for actual admixture events. I have run quite a few f3s which I haven't had the time to post. Many will become surprised by the results when I post them. I may post them under the ancient section since I included all members
For example, the case is looking weak for a direct admixture event between Kotias and other groups in the case of S Asians and most W Asians . I am trying to identify the Partially Kotias derived groups that participated in the actual mixing. I will hopefully get to post the tables today
Based on the latest results which I recently posted at http://www.anthrogenica.com/showthread.php?6423-Caucasian-Ancestry-of-W-amp-S-Asians&p=139548#post139548, I decided to further investigate some of the Kurd samples.
I start with Iraqi Kurd C3. Initially, I was planning to run some dstats comparing Kurd C3 with various modern W Asian and S European groups to determine which groups shared the most genetic drift with it.
At the last minute I decided to include some ancients in the analysis, thinking that the ancients would for sure come in behind some of the modern caucuses groups in terms of shared drift with Kurd C3. I was pleasantly surprised when the results showed that Kurd C3 shares the most drift with some of the ancients such as Andronovo, Potapovka, and Stuttgart, even more so than with Abkhasians, Chechens, and Georgians!!
I have highlighted the ancients purple. The table is sorted with the most shared drift on top, as indicated by the lowest -ve D scores. +ve scores indicate that Kurd C3 shares less drift with those than Bedouin B.
Naturally, my next step is to seek to obtain good fits for Kurd C3 using the ancients that Kurd C3 shares the most drift with, such as Potapovka, Andronovo, Stuttgart, Scythian IA, and others, using qpAdm.

The Dstats from above paid off as they helped me narrow the search, for the steppe pop that gives the best fit for Kurd C3. It had never occurred to me to use Potapovka. Using the 2 ancients that Kurd C3 shares the most drift with Stuttgart and Potapovka, and adding Kotias for CHG immediately gave a very nice fit as shown below:

The Potapovka culture is 4000 to 4500 year old steppe culture, centered on the Samara bend in the middle Volga region, extending east into the Samara River valley.
It seems connected with the earlier stages of the Andronovo culture , and genetically to the Poltavka culture, with influences from the more northerly Abashevo culture. It can be considered as descended from the earlier Khvalynsk culture and Samara culture, both of which occupied this same area.
The recovered remains were Y-DNA R1a1a1b2, and R1a1a1.
Potapovka produced good fits for other Kurds, although not as good as for Kurd C3, indicating somewhat divergent histories among Kurds. Remember, the lower the chisq value and the higher the tail prob, the better the fit.

I did not have time to model all Kurds using Scythian
Recognizing that the amount of Andronovo may vary from one Kurd sample to the next, I will be using all the Kurd samples.
With Iraqi Kurd C3, the fit was really nice with 36% Andronovo.

## end of run
I wonder why Kurds would be more Papuan shifted than Iranians, considering that Iran has about 10-15% recent South Asian admixture. The only possible explanation would be that the Ancestral South Asian in Kurds is much more ancient. What do you think?
It may just be random based on the samples used I would need to use far more Kurd samples* to see if the trend holds.
Edit: *and Iranian samples
There appears to be some difficulty modeling the remaining Kurd samples, Mfa, Znertu, Kurd Yazidi, and to a lesser extent Kurd C1, using the same base populations I used for Afghan Pashtuns ( Kurd C2, Andronovo 503, Scythian IA, Pulliyar, Mongolian) and Iraqi Kurd samples Kurd C2, Kurd C3, and Halgurd ( Andronovo 503, Scythian IA, Chechen, Saudi, Mongolian).
It may be that the Kurd samples from Turkey (Mfa & Znertu) and Kurd Yazidi (not sure where from) need some sort of Mediterranean sample (or a different caucausus) sample in the base populations (for an ancient European input) that the Iraqi Kurd samples did not need.
I will nonetheless post their rather poor fits later in the day for comparison.
EDIT: This is another example, such as with Afghan Pashtun-Pak Pashtun, or Afghan Pashtun-Afghan Tajik, where their ADMIXTURE results are more uniform, but formal methods show them dissimilar.
These discrepancies between formal stats and ADMIXTURE, are consistent with what I have mentioned all along, that ADMIXTURE results are fairly similar for people in the same geographical location, with a steady cline as you move away from that location. This is because ADMIXTURE is driven by recent drift and events, and does not detect more ancient divergent backgrounds (people migrating to a location from different parts of the world a long time ago)
Formal stats on the other hand detect older mutations, and to some extent ignore recent drift and events, thus revealing much more ancient relationships than ADMIXTURE. Thus, if 2 groups, whether Tajik-A Pashtun, or Turkey Kurds-Iraqi Kurds have different ancient ancestries, formal stats will pick up on this much better than ADMIXTURE.
Kurd C1 got the best fits using the base populations for which Iraqi Kurds C2 C3 and Halgurd and Meli and Surbakhun received very good to excellent fits. Nonetheless, although C1's fit is better than the other Kurds (mainly Turkey, not sure about Yazidi), I would not consider it that good. The fits for Znertu Mfa and Yazidi should not be taken seriously as they ranged from very poor to mediocre.

The fixed paths (100% modeling) indicate the following:
1- Kurd C1 is the most Chechen, Mongolian, and Saudi (perhaps due to being the southernmost from the group) out of the group;
2- Kurd Yazidi is the most Andronovo 503 like;
3- Znertu is the most Scythian IA like

I ammended the fixed path (100% modeling) tables by adding all the Iraqi Kurd samples, and note the following:
1- Iraqi Kurds in general seem to be more Andronovo 503 and Scythian IA similar, especially Kurd C2, who appears to be significantly more steppe shifted than the rest. This probably explains why he shares the most drift with Afghan Pashtun sample Meli
2- The Iraqi Kurd samples oddly enough seem to be the most Chechen shifted also
