23andme gives my mtDNA haplogroup as k1a4a1a, but if I run it through James Lick's tool the best mtDNA haplogroup match comes up at k1a4a1a2

However, both come up as an imperfect match:

Which am I most likely to be, and what does the imperfect match mean?

You are K1a4a1a2.

James Lick's calculator is squeezing more information out of your results than 23andMe does.

If you search for K1a4a1a2 at https://www.23andme.com/you/labs/haplogroup_tree_mut_mapper/ , you see that 23andMe does not see that level of detail.

Imperfect match means your data has Mismatches, Extras, No-Calls, and/or Untested markers. For you, the mismatches listed are not important. The defining marker for K1a4a1a2 is 16245T (see http://www.phylotree.org/tree/subtree_U.htm), and you have 16245T.

Incidentally, your mtDNA is an exact match to a skeleton dated 3339-3265 BC found in Germany.

Thank you, I doubt I'll ever know the exact connection, but I think I have definitely found the most ancient relative in my family tree now :-)

I have had 2 bna test one with my heritage and one with 23andme I have also had a download my DNA from my heritage to family tree. Family tree show a trace of west middle east 23and me shows trace of broadly assion a native american my heritage shows small percentage of African and Nigerian my heplogroup is K1a4a1 can you tell me which cluster my ancestor came from many thanks

According to Eupedia, K1a4a1 is found in western, central, northern and eastern Europe, as well as in Ethiopia (Hamar). But as discussed above, you might be something beyond K1a4a1 if you are getting it from 23andMe. For example, 23andMe gives me K2b, but I'm actually K2b2. Looking in the K project for K1a4a1 and its various children, there's not really a pattern beyond all over Europe.
