View Full Version : BGI tour on cable TV

We sometimes watch CCTV, China Central TV, on Verizon cable. Mainly late at night; my wife is especially fond of their more or less droning narrative style, and soft background music. She drops right off. Anyway we were just watching Part 1 (of 7) in a series called "A Biz Date with the World." We tuned in to CCTV shortly after a BBC mystery had ended, didn't see the beginning of the episode. Somewhere around 20 minutes before its end, there was a segment about a fairly rural company making fireworks for export. Then they started talking about DNA, and we perked up enough to realize they were touring BGI, the company that did the sequencing for FGC at the time I got my test there. They were calling it Beijing Genomics Institute -- I thought that was an older name, so the program may not be quite current. But the segment referred to events in 2010 that seemed well in the past; couldn't be too old.

So I've now seen more of the BGI lab than I have of FTDNA's. They didn't really discuss genetic genealogy as such, mostly talked about looking for genes likely to cause birth defects or inherited illness. But some of the printouts that were briefly on screen looked pretty familiar.

Just thought I'd mention it in case someone here has that channel in their lineup, and happens to see that the program is coming on. BGI is the last full segment before the wrapup of Part 1.

Here's a link to the Chinese language version of that episode.

And here's the CCTV-9 English version:
