I have a 33/37 Y-DNA STR marker match with an Arab man at FTDNA. He has only tested out to 37 markers and I have no idea if he will ever test out to 67 or more markers as I send him an email a while back but he never replied. My match with him at this may markers kind of surprised me since my own direct paternal line comes from the Calabria region of Italy and he seems to be Arab. Since we are a 33/37 marker match does this mean that we likely share a MRCA in historical times?

Honestly, I doubt it. I have matches that close with men who are R1b-U106+, and I am U106- and belong to a subclade of P312. When they go out to 67 markers and beyond those matches invariably fall apart.

Of course, you'll never know for sure unless you can convince the man to upgrade.

Were I a betting man, however, I would put money on him disappearing off your radar at 67 markers.

Thanks buddy! I agree with you that it is quite likely that he would disappear off my matches radar if he tested out to 67 markers. But of course as you say I will not know for sure until he upgrades but he may never do that.

This is interesting now. A man with the same surname as myself recently tested (only 37 markers so far) and he and I match at 36/37 markers. He also matches with this Arab man that I mentioned above but he is 34/37 with him. This new found cousin of mine also has a 33/37 marker match with another Arab man that I do not have. What does this mean? Are we related to these Arabs within a genealogical time frame I wonder?

Here are my own and my cousin's markers that we differ on with our Arab matches TiP calculator results for these Arab matches of ours. I will use initials to identify all of them besides myself. Our Arab matches are ''AH'' and ''JQ'' and my cousin is ''Cousin E''. I have a 33/37 marker match with AH and no match with JQ. My cousin who here I call Cousin E has a 34/37 match with AH and a 33/37 match with JQ. Here are the markers that we differ with these Arabs on.

Me vs. AH: 33/37- We have one step mutations at these markers- DYS439, DYS437, DYS449 and DYS456

Cousin E vs. AH: 34/37- 34/37- They have one step mutations at these markers- DYS439, DYS437 and DYS449

Cousin E vs. JQ: 33/37- They have one step mutations at these markers- DYS439, DYS437, DYS449 and DYS464

And here are our TiP calculator results.

Based on all of this then is it possible to tell when my cousin and I may share a MRCA with these Arab matches of ours?
