How to further analyze this?
I've never heard of any kind of african ancestry in my family. Is it believable?

That's less than one tenth of one percent. Honestly, I think it is essentially meaningless. If it isn't noise, it is the next best thing.

Run puntdnal k12 modern on gedmatch. You'll then find out if it's real. Usually 23andme doesn't show ssa unless there's something there in fact, it underrepresents it and hides it.

Are you southern european or colonial american? If you're a colonial you might have about 1% or so ssa and this is what it might be picking up. Southern europeans can have more I would look to gedmatch for answers, ancestry and 23andme's analysis is VERY limited.

just to demonstrate what I mean, here's my ancestry composition on 23andme

9271

1.6% total. Whereas because of my ethnicity I should be between 3 - 5% which is what the gedmatch scores reflect

I've even seen people with 0% SSA on 23andme score 2% elsewhere because, if I remember correctly, the 23andme folks use Nigerians to represent west african ancestry and maasai to represent east african and therefore any other SSA ancestry that doesn't resemble the Nigerian or Maasai samples will end up getting lost.

I have the same tiny percentage of what 23andme calls SSA. What's interesting to me is that some of my matches on 23andme have the same tiny percentage, but not all. It's not actually SSA in my case, I did try the Punt K12modern with my 23andme data. This is the result.

What I find interesting too is that on Gedmatch, with several of the tests, I generally find a bit of the Siberian, Amerindian, etc. The noise tends to be consistent. It's probably not terribly significant nor meaningful, but I find it curious.

I think all North Europeans have some minor levels of ancient Siberian admixture from their ANE etc so this is probably where the siberian and amerinidian comes from (amerinidians are mostly ancestrally north asian if i remember correctly). If you do the gedrosia k3 or k4 calculators you'll end up with just over 1% (or maybe more) East Eurasian admixture and I think that's what it's reflective of.

Interesting that you have now SSA on puntdnal. Maybe OP won't either? I've seen plenty of colonials score 1% or so though (sometimes more) on gedmatch calculators.

I have colonial era white British ancestry. You'd think if I had at much as 1% as you say, something would have showed up in AncestryDNA. Nothing African did. Also the fact that it's east African looks noisy. American blacks are west African.

ran k12 modern on gedmatch. No SSA. 23andMe's hit appears to be noise.

Interestingly, it did show a bit of native american (amerindian). My mother always told me we had a Choktaw ancestor, but it's never shown up in any of these tests. Both my 23andme and AncestryDNA results don't show any asian/amerindian. I'm not convinced this means it's necessarily true (this could be within noise threshold for gedmatch), but interesting.

This Gedrosia K3 with 23andme data--prediction close to correct:

E_Eurasian 3.02
SSA -
W_Eurasian 96.98

The part that I actually find curious is, as I said, that some of my 23andme matches have the same bit labeled SSA. FTDNA gives me 1% Central Asian! I just find the "edge" percentages interesting, don't think there's actually a way to find out what's giving those results.

I also recently received my 23andme results and had < 0.1 Native American. I think the it was in the 7th chromosome. I figured it was noise as I am listed as 100% European, but after reading this thread, perhaps I need to investigate further. Any suggestions for free tools I could use to research this?

I would bet eveything I have it is just noise. In my opinion, you should just ignore it.

Even if I am wrong, it would be just so small that it wouldn't really matter.

Have you uploaded your kit to GEDmatch?

Have you uploaded your kit to GEDmatch?

No, what is that?

No, what is that?

Here is the link:

https://www.gedmatch.com/login1.php

GEDmatch allows people to upload their autosomal DNA kits (i.e Family Finder, 23andMe, AncestryDNA, etc.) so that they can compare them with people who tested elsewhere or with ones from the same service which did not make their match lists. GM also has various admixture programs for those who are looking for where they came from.
