Cancer resistance evident in naked mole rat’s DNA. Naked mole rats are one of the longest-living rodent species. Naked mole rats live longer. They can live up to 30 years and 10 times longer. Cancer resistance is clear in these animals as cancer was never detected in these animals.

The research team from Hokkaido University and Keio University in Japan are examining naked mole rats (NMR) have anti-cancer treatments. This may help advance treatment options and probable solutions for humans, reports ScienceAlert.

The researchers have reprogrammed skin fibroblast tissue from adult mole rats to return to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). This can turn other types of body tissue just like embryonic stem cells. The transplantation of these tissues can develop into tumors.

Mole-rate stem cells have tumor-suppressing gene. The gene alternative reading frame (ARF) remained active in mole rat iPSCs. These iPSCs are restrained in humans and mice.

Mutated and defected iPSCs are tumorigenic gene or ES cell expressed Ras (ERAS). This same gene is found in the embryonic cells and iPSCs of mice. Disabling the ARF gene caused the mice to developed large tumors, forcing the mouse ERAS to activate in mole rate iPSCs.

“We conclude that the tumor resistance in NMR-iPSCs is based on NMR-specific ARF regulation and disruption of ERAS,” said the researchers.

“Further research into the detailed mechanisms underlying ASIS (ARF suppression-induced senescence) in naked mole-rats,” said Kyoko Miura of Hokkaido University.

This added research “may shed new light on cancer resistance in the mole-rats.” It can “give to the generation of non-tumorigenic human-iPSCs, enabling safer cell-based therapeutics,” added Miura.

Cancer resistance knowledge from naked mole rats can be developed into a cancer vaccine. This, in a way, will be the killer of one of humankind’s deadliest disease. It would be a great help is nobody will suffer from cancer.
