Polynesian DNA Project

Hi/Kia ora/Hui/Ia ora na/Talofa

Welcome to the Polynesian DNA Project! This thread was originally created for the Oceanian Genetics Project (OGP). As there is already the Polynesian DNA Project, managed by Kalani Mondoy on both Family Tree DNA and Facebook, I decided to pool my efforts into working to help grow this already existing community. Hopefully by doing this it will grow an already large community even more.

1. Who can join the Polynesian DNA Project on Family Tree DNA?

In order to participate in this project, you must be of Polynesian ancestry and have taken one of the following tests:

1) Y-DNA (males only)

2) mtDNA Full Sequence

3) Family Finder (autosomal) (must have autosomal matches with other Polynesians).

I have no known Oceanian ancestors, as far as I know, within 5 to 7 generations both paternal and maternal lines, but I consistently score Oceanian at Gedmatch. Here are the results:

Thanks for all this. I'll add you when I get home. As most Oceanian people descend from Southeast Asia, it's the "ancestral homeland" of sorts. It's not surprising you score some Oceanian.

Thanks, too. So it must be ancient and not recent.

Probably, but it's really hard to know. You've been added. I've changed the description so Southeast Asian people can participate as well.

I've now gone and made this an open project, so anyone with Oceanian ancestry can add and edit the spreadsheet. Please do not add false data, or add results for people who have no known Oceanian or Southeast Asian ancestry i.e. someone who is 100% English. Only add data for those who you have gained permission from.

The spreadsheet can be accessed and edited by clicking the following:

Feel free to add your results my friend :beerchug: Did the Assamese have Southeast Asian influence at a point in time?

Assam along with the six other NE Indian States are culturally Southeast Asian and not South Asian. The wiki article on SE Asia also refers to this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southeast_Asia

After I posted I went and did some research and find the cultural differences intriguing. Without knowing a lot, It probably explains the higher Oceanian.
