His ancestry comes from Serradifalco and Marianopoli, in the dead center of the island where there has likely been more isolation. He comes out, like most Sicilians, as something akin to half Spanish/North Italian, half Lebanese. But his numbers are a bit off compared to most.

No Greek input in this part of the island yet the result still comes up close to Greeks (especially Crete).

Yes. I posted them elsewhere. :)

A bit the Greeks of Agrigento but this part of the island remained mostly Sicanian. Those results appear like most of other Sicilians I've seen.

Supposed indeed, the historic Greek colonization touched the coasts. Sicily before Romans was hellenized by culture but ethnic situation was different. See the map below: in blue the Siculi cities, in red the Elimi cities, in green the cities of Sicani, in black the cities of Greeks and in pink the Phoenician cities. As you can see the Italic cities populations were a lot more than even Greeks.

Indeed a good case of a result showing two contradictory shifts, one towards NA, the other to the NW, that's why none of the fits are very close at ~4. One could see two influences meeting there, possibly Normand-Lombard, and something else.

Or also Basque, French, British Isles or North European shifted if you continue the Oracle ;)

Further down the oracle is the less accurate results given the distance metric beside it. The most accurate is that this person is, based on the aggregate of the oracles, either very Ashkenazi-like, or a Sicilian shifted toward Iberia, Sardinia, or NW Africa (Berbers). My guess is Sicanians were either Sardinian or Berber like, and then mixed with Neolithic incomers from the Near East. I therefore think a Levantine genetic base of Sicily is present on the entire island (as they get Lebanese + Spanish each time, almost) and is very old.

Indeed this person's Red Sea, NW African, etc. type components seem to be strong.

Either way what we can see is, most Sicilians are genetically of the same stock whether north, east, central, west, or south on the island. There are however minor differences.

The lack of Steppe/Russian derived DNA suggests little Greek affinity or Indo-European.

I'm sorry to say this but Neolithic expansion from Anatolia/Near East =/= Levantine.

Yes, Levantines have some of that same ancestry, but this is not their base, even Levantines such as the Samaritans don't usually score as high on the EEF/Anatolia Neolithic as the Sicilians - part of the reason for this is because Levantines score higher in CHG or West Asian components and then score a similar amount of EEF and Natufian or Red Sea like ancestry (with other minor bits here and there). Whereas Sicilians and Sardinians tend to score a lot of EEF/Anatolia Neolithic with a bit of WHG, NW African and Red Sea blended in. I would say it would be fairer to classify the East Med component as Sicilian or Sardinian (or just European farmer) than 'Levantine', just because the focal point has changed since the farmers first left Anatolia/the East Med.

On the Near East Neolithic K13, Sicilians and Ashkenazis score the most Natufian of all of the Europeans. But I know what you mean. If you would not call their West Asian "half" Levantine, how would you explain why Sicilians and especially the Calabrese shift so far eastward?

If you see this person's result on that calculator, they score on Oracle something like 7/8 Greek, 1/8 Levant.

Indeed a good case of a result showing two contradictory shifts, one towards NA, the other to the NW, that's why none of the fits are very close at ~4. One could see two influences meeting there, possibly Normand-Lombard, and something else.

IMo it's simply a combination of Oracle.

Some sourced have said that Sicani were ancient Iberian-like but I want to see aDNA. Ancient Sardinian were probably close to ancient Iberian and the original Berbers perhaps as well, possibly Sicani belongs to the same stock but it's only hypotesis ;)

While he does look Ashkenazi-like on the other calculators, I can easily tell from his K13 results that he's Sicilian.

EDIT: On a basal scale Anatolia_Neolithic looks like PPN or even Natufian with more Villabruna-like admixture, I agree with Awale on this, so while the origins of Anatolia_Neolithic are complex, it probably derives most of its ancestry from a source common to the Levantine PPN (if not from it).

Oetzi, who was a neolithic farmer, already had North African admixture. He lived long before the historical populations had their names.

La Brana shouldn't get that much SSA unless it is the first low quality sequence. The one in Gedmatch now (F999915) has almost none (0.18%) in K12b.

Sicilians had to get their Caucasus and SW Asian affinity somewhere. My guess is the Caucasus affinity came from either Sikels or Elymians, if we assume the Sicanians were Sardinian, Iberian, or Berber like.

Ancient DNA is always a surprise, this is the reason why I love it so much. Anyway is this F999916 the kitnumber of Stuttgart?if so he scores 3.79% of North West African admix on Dodecad K12b. My dream is to see pre-Greek DNA from South Italy and then ancient Greek DNA from Greece. Roman colonization shouldn't have had changed the local DNA of indigenous Italic peoples of South Italy since Romans were also Italic as well. I'm waiting for news.

As some pointed out, what both admix and oracle suggest (if you feel like trying to read into it), he has simply higher N.African and at the same time higher West/NW Euro than the average which isn't reconciliable in one single fit made of 2 pop (it's the limitation of gedmatch mix mode compared to say nMonte). By definition it's an average, half will get more/less of things but it doesn't all come from neolithic. It would require more samples to see if it's something particular to the region or just an individual genetic history.

My thought is the pre-Greek, pre-Italic people of both regions were similar, but that Italy has since been Italicized and Greece has been Slavicized, hence the differences today. Romans also did not settle en masse.

When compared to Greek, he is about 15-20% Arabian. This is another reference point.

What I find interesting about the result is the component numbers are different than most Sicilians I have seen but somehow they come out as 50% Iberian, 50% Lebanese.

Ok here is another result to complicate matters.

This person's ancestry all comes from inland Palermo province, from Alia and from Montemaggiore Belsito. Also in "Sicanian" territory. But she has a noticeably greater Levantine shift than the person from Caltanissetta.

My thought is the pre-Greek, pre-Italic people of both regions were similar, but that Italy has since been Italicized and Greece has been Slavicized, hence the differences today. Romans also did not settle en masse.

[QUOTE=My dream is to see pre-Greek DNA from South Italy and then ancient Greek DNA from Greece. Roman colonization shouldn't have had changed the local DNA of indigenous Italic peoples of South Italy since Romans were also Italic as well. I'm waiting for news.[/QUOTE]

I wouldn't be surprised if there's already plenty of ancient Greek DNA data sitting quietly on a shelf someplace. And I'm sure there wouldn't be any rush to "prove" ancient Greek = modern Greek, given today's socio-political climate and the neighboring countries who's interests partly depend on keeping Greece down.

On any DNA test, Greeks have an Eastern European element absent in Sicilians (hence why many Greeks on GEDmatch come up 75% Sicilian and 25% Slavic). Also y-dna shows the Slavic input in some regions.

My guess is if we have ancient Greek DNA we will find that modern Greece is very different genetically than the ancient. Greece is just part of the Balkan spectrum, I don't see anything too genetically distinct when compared to say, Bulgaria.

Mainland Greeks have Slavs admix, Islanders not, the last ones are genetically very similar of South Italians and Sicilians.

At the end of the day:

Greeks never cluster with Slavs on any test.

Modern Slavic nations have genetic elements that are absent in Greeks.

The above cannot be explained away, not matter how hard people try.

Yes, this is true.

What do you think of the result from inland Palermo? It is different to the Caltanissetta result (even if overall you can tell they're the same ethnicity), despite also being from ancient Sicanian land as well. I wonder if Palermo, being a more populated area, saw more Near Eastern influx from the Levant or something.

Either way, these differences across results are small in the long run, they reflect different inputs into and out of the population. I notice Palermitans do tend to be more similar to people from Messina than to Trapani oddly.

Greeks shift toward Slavs when compared to Sicilians, Aegean islanders, and Turks. (Yes, I know Aegean islanders are Greeks too but you know what I mean).

Another inland Caltanissetta result. This one is more Levantine shifted than the other, but also has a slight shift in two directions: North Africa, and North Europe.

Makes me wonder if the inland region retained a higher degree of affinity to North Africa that was diluted by settlement on the coasts of other groups.

I am a Turkish Alawite with only Syrian Coastal heritage. The last inland Caltanissetta result looks so similar to my result. I am kind of new to genetic discussions. How should I read and understand those results? Why inland results are more similar to Levantine results than east Sicilian results? Can this similarities be related with Phoenicians? Also we share 13 out of 20 single population sharing. If My genes are similar to Sicilians, why does not Sicilian appear on my population sharing (it only appeared in one of GEDmatch combinations)? Sardinian appears in DNA.land result, what is the genetic differences between Sardinian and Sicilian?
