View Full Version : R1b-U152 Phylogeny (SNP based family tree)

I haven't done a good job on this, but I try to keep this graphic current. It is the Y DNA tree/phylogeny for U152 as best as I know it. Please post any corrections or omissions here. I'm only trying to track SNPs that consumers can or soon will be able to order. This is so I can track R1b haplotypes and put them in the right subclades. Ultimately, this can help R1b predicted people identify SNP testing strategies.

If I can draw the phylogeny properly I can update a Clade/SNP Index I keep in a spreadsheet that allows formulas to automatically classify people into the right subclades. If that index is correct, when I scrape the U152, P312, R1b1a2 and R1b project Y DNA SNP reports, then new SNP results can quickly adjust haplogroup labeling and relevant SNP test results in the spreadsheet.

FTDNA's haplotree is behind so for source data for the graphic I use International Society of Genetic Genealogy's (ISOGG) Y hapgroup R tree at

Mike - nice graphic, thank you. Are there any estimates of what percentage of U152 fall into the major named subclades, and how many are U152*?

Mike, are you only looking to place just the SNPs that can be confirmed with commercial testing?

Yes, but I'm okay with having extra information on the chart.

What I mean is the primary intent is to include only SNPs that will show up either in FTDNA haplotrees, National Geno 2 results and WTY results. The main target is really the Y DNA SNP report so as new updates come in haplotypes from the projects will be automatically reclassified on the spreadsheet. Ultimately, the haplotypes (including their SNPs) will be included in an updated "67 STR haplotype compare" tool to help R1b newbies in the big R1b "Gateway" project get started on SNP testing.

However, if an SNP is a critical with the tree for U152 but just not available yet but we know it is there and solid, I'll add it just for correctness sake.

Mike, please add the CTS188/CTS4333/CTS7958 group under U152+Z36+(xZ54). All three have been identified in a Z36+ sample in 1KG and by Geno 2.0. HEre is a discussion regarding them:

Does this look any better? I also noticed I had Z54 on there twice so I correct that.

If you are going just by ISOGG, then that is good for now. However, based on the two unrelated Z36+CST188/CTS433/CTS7958+ are from two different geographies (Swiss and Puerto Rico) and one if from 1KG and the other from FTDNA, I would say that the cluster is pretty much a given. I will confirm when more CTS188 tests start to trickle in.

It sounds like you are saying CTS188 (et al.) are known to be parallel to Z54 under Z36, right? Is there any reason for a Z54+ guy to test for CTS188?

CTS188/CTS433/CTS7958 are almost certainly public as well given that wide geographic distribution. If it is in the testing queue then I think it deserves a position on a draft tree. It looks like these SNPs are exciting news!

Mike,

L671 tested negative for Z54 and L320 null and S44 haven't tested for Z54. They are under Z36, but not Z54.
