Z34

Hi everyone,

I've been recently told by someone in the know that according to the information my kit provides there's a chance I'd be of the subclade Z34 (already confirmed R-L2), just wondering if any info is out there on the particularities of Z34, it's origins, what it specifies, etc.. Any info you might have would be greatly appreciated.

I tested positive for R-Z34, most exciting. Still not sure what distinguishes it from its upper clade though, I'd like to know what it's geography, spread and migration are and how it differs. Not many subclades left from what I can see, can't wait to reach the last recognized subclade for this line of haplogroup!

But with your urge to go deep on the haplotree, I can not stop wondering why you did not take a Big Y in the first place. If you had taken it on a sale, it would have costed you the same as all that individual SNP testing...

I am also Z34 (unlike you, however, I am Z33+ as well), and am also of French-Canadian descent on my paternal line. To learn more about your haplogroup and its origins, I would join the R-U152 Project at FTDNA (here at https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/r-1b-u152/about/background).

Hello, I haven't been on here in a long time. I administer the Maidlen/Maitlen/Medlin/Madelin/Maudlin/Modlin etc project on FTDNA. It appears your Y20995* places you as closest Y "cousin" to my group, cutting the distance to other Z34+ "cousins" in half, whom appear to have Scandanavian origin. YFull is still suggesting MRCA of over 2000 years, but I suspect it is more recent. My group is presumed to have most recent common ancestor in England, but has not yet been verified. Most of the group are Americans descending from Colonial period immigrants to Virginia or North Carolina. We have one confirmed "cousin" who's line never crossed the pond, with line traced back to Shropshire, England in the 1600s, and an NPE cousin in US with line back to Shropshire as well.

There appears to be a little more info on the FTDNA block tree than on Y Full (or a disconnect)

Y Full shows you and 5 from my group under Y20995 as the only Z33- under Z34+

The FTDNA block tree shows 2 more samples from Sweden that share 3 SNPs with us, but do not share 10 that you share with my group. These 2 from Sweden are also Z33-, so do not appear to be in YFull or ytree.

ytree.net (The Big Tree) shows you with one from my group (Maudlin) as only Z33- under Z34+
