I maintain the R1b-L21_haplotypes spreadsheet of all the confirmed and suspected (if 67 STRs) L21 haplotypes that I can find from public projects. Its found under the Links section of the R1b-L21-Project Yahoo group under "Haplotype Data". The Links section is in alphabetic order. I generally only add suspected haplotypes if they are a pretty good match with existing confirmed L21+ varieties at 67 STRs. I do NOT use any robot type programs to copy information from projects. I do it manually and only from public information.

There is a "Readme" help tab on the far left at the bottom. You may have to hit the left arrow to get to it.

The "AllHts" tab has all of the haplotypes.

All Haplotypes are displayed, but only the first 67 STRs per each haplotype.

The first group of columns provides background information including the kit #, Most Distant Known Ancestor (MDKA) surname, SNP based haplogroup definition, STR signature based variety (cluster) and geographic origin.
The Hg (haplogroup) column shows a description of the phylogenetic tree branch that the haplotype is on, according to the relevant Downstream SNPs.

The next group of columns is the first set of STR columns. They are the STR values in FTDNA panel sequence order with each multi-copy element broken out.

The Relevant SNPs column is a list of directly relevant SNP test results. Only the lowest level (youngest) positive (derived) SNP is shown plus any negative (ancestral) tested SNPs one level younger than the. In additioned, unpositioned (on the tree) SNP results are also shown.

The second set of STR columns shows only the Genetic Distance (GD) from the Base Haplotype at the top of the screen per each STR. This STR columns are displayed in order from slowest to fastest mutation rate.

On the far right are three columns that control GD calculations for the distance across all 67 STRs for any haplotype that you select versus all of the other 67 STR length haplotypes in the worksheet. You select the Target haplotype by putting an "x" in the yellow cell next to it. You can only select one haplotype as the target. You can make the target haplotype the modal for a selected set of haplotypes by putting an "x" at the top of the spreadsheet next to the calculated Mode row.

The last column has the Ysearch IDs where we could find them. You can use Ysearch to directly to contact the owner of the haplotype.

A statistical summary section is at the bottom of the spreadsheet. The calculations include:
Allele distribution table per each STR, 1-67
Count
Mode per each STR
Diversity per each STR
Variance per each STR
Standard Deviation per each STR
Mean per each STR
Sum of the Variance for all 67 STRs

The blue titled rows are numbers totalled for the whole spreadsheet. The green titled rows are totals for just the selected haplotypes.

You can use the autofiltering function of the spreadsheet in conjunction with the the green titled totals. Select (filter) to just view the haplotypes you want and the green titled statistics will subtotal for just those selected. Selection is accomplished by using the to the Column heading drop down arrow "autofilter" functionality.


The "ExtHts" tab has all of the 111 STR haplotypes.

Extended 111 STRs (only) are displayed on this worksheet. The GD and statistical capabilities are similar to AllHts.


The "Clades" tab has the SNP/haplogroup tree pointer information and the STR signatures of the deep ancestral varieties assigned.

Clades has two sections. First, a list of SNPs with associated haplogroup labels. The haplogroup labels on the other worksheets are displayed based on the SNPs in the Downstream SNPs column and how they align with this first table within Clade. This table contains branching depth levels as well as SNPs that need to be translated to other synomous SNPs for consistency purposes

The second section of Clade is a list of STR based variety labels along with their actual off-modal STR values.


The "Rates" tab has misc. information.

This worksheet primarily just contains supplemental information, like mutation rates for STRs. There are a set of columns where the modal values for the largest R1b subclades is kept. WAMH, the Western Atlantic Modal Haplotype, is an obsolete set of modals based on a conglomeration of R1b clades. Effectively, the R1b-P312 modal supersedes it in represent the most common subclade in Western Europe.

Just a quick check of the numbers in your R1b-L21 Haplotypes Spreadsheet
7,640 67 marker Hts
3,462 of those are L21 Tested at 45%

I updated this spreadsheet a few minutes ago. Here are the counts I have in this version. This version includes every 67 STR R1b1a2 suspected match with an L21+ individual from both the Wales and British Isles DNA projects. This is regardless of whether they fit a well-known variety (STR signature) or not. I tried to do this with France but it is frustrating. The French R1b1a2 don't often fit with a match so I don't get anywhere.

9227 haplotypes in all, including 1752 at 111 STRs
4582 are L21+ confirmed
2631 are DF13+ confirmed but many of the 4582 need testing on DF13
54 are DF63+ confirmed
12 are DF13* (negative for the Big 8, 3 of these are also Z251-)
1080 are DF49+ confirmed, of which 1023 are M222+
247 are L513+ (aka DF1) confirmed
219 are DF21+ confirmed
76 are DF41+ confirmed
293 are Z253+ confirmed
178 are Z255+ confirmed
103 are L1335+ confirmed
22 are CTS4466+ confirmed
3 are Z251+ confirmed but testing has just started on this
21 are L371+ confirmed
16 are L555+ confirmed
46 are L144.1+ confirmed
3 is L96+ confirmed

I've added Z251. It is no doubt public and appears to be parallel to most of the DF13 subclades although that is not completely settled.

If you are not interested in the surnames and subgroups of L21 you should skip the next four posts including this one.

Below are the STR signature based deep ancestral varieties I have for L21 people. Of course, these are assigned within known SNP based subclades. Some of these are really just 67 STR versions of old modals such as NW Irish, Irish II, Irish III, Irish IV, Irish Sea/Leinster, Colla/null425, Scots, MacWho, Little Scots, 11-13 Combo, Wales-SW England, Irish Viking, Wales I, Wales II, Airghelli I, Airghelli II, Rich's Spanish, Rich's East/Baltic, etc., etc.

Where a surname pops up more than a couple of times I include that in brackets. I haven't tried to analyze by surname origin but that is an interesting thought.

This table is stored on the Clades tab/worksheet of the R1b-L21 Haplotypes workbook.

Please add FTDNA kit #276365 Gleeman to the spreadsheet. You can find this in the FTDNA Jewish Ukraine West project. While this person does not have an L21 result, he is listed with the other L21 people in this project, and is an exact 37 marker match to kit 201644 Burde, one of my L583+ brethren. Am trying to convince the owner of this kit to test L583 (which they will probably do in a few weeks).

The spreadsheet has been updated with about 200 new haplotypes, mostly R1b1a2 predicted (L21 suspects) from the 67 STR matches from the Irish Heritage projects. I eliminated all 492=13/14 (probably U106 or U152) and all NS cluster folks (Z220) and then I started looking for close GD's and STR signature matches within the L21+ known list of folks.

I maintain the R1b-L21_haplotypes spreadsheet of all the confirmed and suspected (if 67 STRs) L21 haplotypes that I can find from public projects. Its found under the Links section of the R1b-L21-Project Yahoo group under "Haplotype Data". The Links section is in alphabetic order. I generally only add suspected haplotypes if they are a pretty good match with existing confirmed L21+ varieties at 67 STRs. I do NOT use any robot type programs to copy information from projects. I do it manually and only from public information.

There is a "Readme" help tab on the far left at the bottom. You may have to hit the left arrow to get to it.

The "AllHts" tab has all of the haplotypes.

All Haplotypes are displayed, but only the first 67 STRs per each haplotype.

The first group of columns provides background information including the kit #, Most Distant Known Ancestor (MDKA) surname, SNP based haplogroup definition, STR signature based variety (cluster) and geographic origin.
The Hg (haplogroup) column shows a description of the phylogenetic tree branch that the haplotype is on, according to the relevant Downstream SNPs.

The next group of columns is the first set of STR columns. They are the STR values in FTDNA panel sequence order with each multi-copy element broken out.

The Relevant SNPs column is a list of directly relevant SNP test results. Only the lowest level (youngest) positive (derived) SNP is shown plus any negative (ancestral) tested SNPs one level younger than the. In additioned, unpositioned (on the tree) SNP results are also shown.

The second set of STR columns shows only the Genetic Distance (GD) from the Base Haplotype at the top of the screen per each STR. This STR columns are displayed in order from slowest to fastest mutation rate.

On the far right are three columns that control GD calculations for the distance across all 67 STRs for any haplotype that you select versus all of the other 67 STR length haplotypes in the worksheet. You select the Target haplotype by putting an "x" in the yellow cell next to it. You can only select one haplotype as the target. You can make the target haplotype the modal for a selected set of haplotypes by putting an "x" at the top of the spreadsheet next to the calculated Mode row.

The last column has the Ysearch IDs where we could find them. You can use Ysearch to directly to contact the owner of the haplotype.



Regrettably this function of Ysearch has not worked for some time now. The large number of people who have yet to discover what is a haplogroup made Ysearch dubious to use. It is now less usable yet.

We are now at 9747 haplotypes. 8108 are 67 STRs or more so you can see 67 truly is the standard. However, 111, keeps plugging away and we now have 1877 111 STR haplotypes. :)

I updated the R1b-L21_haplotypes spreadsheet with the latest SNP results. Its found under the Links section of this Yahoo group under "Haplotype Data". The latest SNP results are included. There are now 2077 111 STR haplotypes on the ExtHts tab.

I've added a number of folks from the Powers and Ruddy surname projects who appear as good L513 suspects.

If you don't like spreadsheets, here is a .pdf view only version of the main portion of the file.

When I try to get to the L21 Project group at Yahoo I get this message.
"We did not find results for: http neo group r1b l21 project conversation message messages conversations project groups. Try the suggestions below or type a new query above."
I am logged in to Yahoo, and generally go via the "Groups" page, as I have always done.

Yahoo do not make it easy to use.
There "Help" section is a joke.

Once you get to the the links, you can save them as bookmarks so you don't have to go back into the Yahoo group again.

However, you don't need to go to the yahoo web site other than for the first time to get the links to the files.

I updated the files again earlier today. The graphic R1b-L21_Tree_Chart (.pdf/.png/.pptx) now uses colors and has the boxes marked a little more clearly. I have requests to place the boxes (SNPs) by age. I also have requests to increase the size of the boxes. I'm leery of doing those kinds of things as I think we'll be doubling and tripling the number of SNPs on the chart soon.

Gerard, fantastic and fascinating work!

I do see that the day is upon us when genealogies, family and clan histories, and deep ancestry are connected. I've focused on the genetic data but your work on the geographies, surnames and ancient document is every bit as important and definitely more interesting.

Do you have a plan to permanently have a page/link per major subclade set up that I can refer people too and ensure are easy to find from the L21 yahoo group?

Thanks. My SNP analysis is based on your spreadsheets which is a great resource.
I will keep posting updates to the above Pinterest boards and will add additional Clan Name boards as the linkages become clearer.
What I am seeing is that Clans are spread between different SNPs and SNPs are spread across different Clans.
However a general picture of Clan Mapping is emerging.
If we can correct the branching of the ancient genealogies then it will be worthwhile.

We now have 2,739 111 STR length haplotypes on the ExtHts tab in the R1b-L21_Haplotypes spreadsheet.

I also checked on pending Big Y orders for L21 people (all projects). We are 340. Almost all of those are at 67 STRs and 270 of them are even at 111 STRs.

That's really good news. If you are executing an NGS test like Big Y or FGC, that's a good thing, but if you are planning on doing SNP testing by one at a time I think you should get to 111 STRs as quickly as you can if you are not already there. This will set you up well as the plethora of SNPs to come early this year.

I'm going to use this thread for this discussion because, in fact, I do use these files to attempt to integrate data from different sources. I've not been very good at clearly communicating where I'm trying to encourage the R1b-L21 related project of people to go so I will give it a shot here and continue on into more detail. I'm speaking in terms of the broader project, regardless of membership in the formal on-line project. Richard S supports that directly and that is a huge ship in and of itself to captain.

I am advocating a consistent methodology for discovery of the R1b-L21 descendancy tree down and into the genetic genealogy level. By genetic genealogy I mean down to our surnames, inter-family and finally family relationships to the point where we can see connections with genealogical documentation and family and clan history.

I do not advocate there is only one type or brand of test for us to get there. I do not advocate there is only one service or analysis to get there. There is a lot of hard work in this. No one offering does the trick. This is not just about comparing Geno 2 raw results (like David Reynolds used to do) or Chromo 2 raw results (which I dabble in) or Big Y or FGC analysis of one type or another, nor FTDNA tip TMRCA calculators, etc., etc. Those of you who are project administrators probably well understand the issues of piecing together these things.

In my view, genetic genealogy is about all of the above and more. The surname analysis and origin analysis are important aspects as well. We are only related because of some geographic commonality between and an ancestor patriarch and matriarch pair. It take two to tangle so geography is important. You'll notice I try to break down MDKA origin in a consistent country, province, county format in the R1b-L21_Haplotypes files.

In the past we haven't had the abilities to go that deep without some extensive gray areas of guesswork. At least that's what I've run into. Data from NGS tests and 111 STR haplotypes are the new news opening the door for us, but we still need the Geno2/Chromo2 types of tests and one at a time SNP testing. There are a variety of budgets and needs.

I don't think any one service or any one test will get each of us all the way there. I can not say for sure which products and services will be best in the future. Different people have to try different things and we learn as we go. Individuals always have to make the final choices anyway. I'm just supportive of clear and open discussion so that individuals get the information they need.

My primary advocacy along of consistent methodologies are to:
1) Enable as many people as possible to participate without high cost, or free when possible.
2) Identify or create a consistent set of tools for supporting the basic information and sharing as much as possible so there is consistent and reliable reporting. This allows for the integration of components into a bigger picture or further subdivision into finer components.
3) Facilitate the common, public and free file storage of documentation, implementing the scientific principle of "full disclosure", thereby supporting better peer review and the repeatedibility of an experiment or finding.

I would like to see everyone who is L21+ get at least 12 STR markers and join FTDNA's R-L21 Plus Project. Of course, 111 markers would be best, but 12 would at least get everyone in. That gives us a centralized source of data that is available to everyone via the public web site. Anyone with an internet connection can see the haplotypes and what SNPs (of those available through FTDNA) have been tested.

Project membership also creates a network that makes mutual contact possible.

Just to make sure everyone knows: It's beneficial for everyone L21+ person to join this project. It is great to be in sub L21 projects like DF41, L513, M222, etc. We are supportive of that, so this is in addition. You can join more than one project with no cost and Richard does a great job of keeping up the subgroupings. Think of it as being a traffic cop for L21.

One of the side benefits is that I scrape (copy/paste) the R-L21 FTDNA project Y classic and Y SNP report screens about once a week. That gets you on the R1b-L21_Haplotypes spreadsheet and some of the derivatives like the R1b-M222_Haplotypes spreadsheet. These tools have GD calculators, detailed STR signature variety (cluster) assignments and SNP results all integrated in a way that can be sorted, sliced, diced and tabulated in multiple ways.

For people who share their Chromo 2 results in the R1b-L21-project yahoo group "files" folder, I include those SNP results. Thomas Krahn's YSEQ has facilitated public sharing for L21 people too so I now have YSEQ L21 project (ID=11) results integrated in the spreadsheet. I plan to check the YSEQ L21 project screen along with the R-L21 FTDNA project screen once a week for updates and integration into the spreadsheets. This is all extra work for me so I like it when people join the R-L21 project that Richard is describing. Even if it is only 12 STRs, it also gets your MDKA name and origins on the "scoreboard" and in the spreadsheets.

Of course, there are privacy policies so personal contact information, etc. is not released. Ysearch.org provides a facility for contacting matches without exchanging personal contact information so I do encourage uploading your data to Ysearch.

That's cool. You are really good with graphics. Are the sizes (fonts) of the surnames indicative of the relative frequency within the particular subclade?

The larger fonts are indicative of higher frequency except for DF41 which had fewer names and appears relatively larger in its box.
Do you have a list of all all Big Y and FGC on order or are they in one of the datasets. I would be happy to do a visualization by terminal SNP so that we can track them better. My focus will be on DF21 and L21 in Ireland. I am experimenting with Geno 2.0 and BISDNA raw data results using Google Fustion Tables and Big Eyes but with disappointing results so far because of different naming conventions. This should improve when I get my own Big Y and FGC.

Just one thing, I just noticed that my surname is broken in 2 different parts, I think that is a weakness of the tool, we should read Le Gall and I can see Le and Gall as 2 surnames instead of one :-)

Here is a quick update on what I've been tracking for L21.

Number of haplotypes that I'm pretty sure are L21: 12,743
Subset that have 67 or more STRs: 10,826
Subset that have 111 STRs: 3,011

Those are great numbers and good for all of us when comparing ourselves and delving into L21. The 111 STR total, I think, is particularly important as that helps people that want to do one at a time SNP testing. I run into false or not quite youthful matches for L21 folks with even 67 STRs. However, at 111, I haven't seen a misleading match yet.

We've also forged ahead on NGS testing. We have 347 L21 Big Y results shared and compared. There are another 10 I can identify but haven't been able to reach to get permission to share their results. I probably need to take another run at them. With the latest orders, we should have 550 plus Big Y results within a couple of months.

We are pushing ahead on YSEQ single SNP testing too. We have almost 90 L21 folks with YSEQ results in the L21 public project with a number pending. The haplogypes spreadsheet includes data from both sources, based on an FTDNA kit by YSEQ ID cross-reference.
