View Full Version : L817 in the Arabian Peninsula

I'm from Najd which is the central region of Arabia. My family were farmers not bedouins and they settled there for at least 2 centuries before that i don't really know. According to my grandfather we are descendants from Banu Tamim, it was a major Adnani tribe in Najd but most of them moved to Iraq a centuries ago. My Haplogroup is J-S4924 and i'm also L817+, but from what i read on the internet not much Arabs are L817+. I'm not an expert in this field and i would be really glad to hear from you guys.

i made an order and i'm waiting to see the result.. the two were shown on the recommended SNPs. but i ordered L816 only just to save some money:biggrin1:
, if i'm not mistaken if i was L816+ then i'm L818+.. if it shows that i'm L816- then i would have to test for L818.

That's to be expected, L816 looks uniquely Jewish and its TMRCA fits within the time frame of the Ashkenazi bottleneck.

Finally my result came out.. i'm L818- too, so what does that tell me about my ancestry,heritage, and my origin? i'm kind of disappointed i thought that genetics could tell me a lot about my family history and my ancestors ethnicity but apparently it did not.. i don't know if that is due to the lack of data! or because scientists do not care much about these kind of subject!

The structure of your matches do reveal your ethnic origins in the last centuries and millennia. You should have at least FTDNA 67 markers, observe your STR cluster and you need Big Y or FGC test, so you can see where are your matches. You can more or less find the frequency of your haplotype or genetic cluster in your original population. We can find our origins in the last 1000/2000 years but of course 10000/15000 years is far more complex and we still need ancient DNA.

Hi Omar,

L817 is an unstable SNP.

I'm also L817+ but belong to a completely different branch within J1. These are my tested SNPs according to FTDNA: FGC3708+, L1253-, L1279-, L147+, L174-, L222-, L572+, L585-, L615-, L616-, L620+, L65-, L817+, L829-, L858+, L859-, L897-, L92-, L93-, M367-, M368-, M369-, P58+, YSC0000076-, Z640-, Z641-, Z642-, Z643+, Z644-

The Full Genomes sequence of my y-chromosome also revealed that I'm L817+. So it appears in two different sections in the J1 tree!

That's the reason why it is labelled as UNSTABLE in Victar Mas' J1 tree:


I fear you need to order the J1 SNP Pack or BigY in order to find your exact place within the J1 tree!

Omar, from your Geno results I see that you are like myself FGC3718_Y6369+!!! Your FTDNA haplogroup prediction (J-S4924) is simply wrong.

This is a distribution map of our subclade defined by the SNPs FGC3723/FGC3716/FGC3708/FGC3718:


When I tested L817+ we discussed it here on this forum and we didn't exclude that L817 could define a private mutation of my own subclade and that it happened independently twice within J1 because it hasn't appeared somewhere else in the J1 tree.

It would so interesting if you tested BigY.

We could be related more closely than we now know.

I still do not know how my lineage ended up in Austria.

Too bad that Geno 2.0 predictions are not reliable and too many SNP results turn out to be false positives...


We'll have to wait on your J1 SNP Pack results in order to confirm your specific J1 subclade!
