View Full Version : Actor John Wayne R1b-M222

This topic (John Wayne's y haplogroup) came up over on the R1b- L21 and Subclades Project Facebook page. I remembered reading some years ago that John Wayne, whose real name was Marion Michael Morrison, was known to be R1b-M222 because at least one male Morrison in the same y-dna line had tested M222+.

If you look at the Clan Morrison y-dna results page (http://morrisondna.x10.bz/morrison/MorrisonDNAProject.htm) and use the find function to locate kit 27706 (or laboriously scroll down until you find it), you will see what I mean.

Do we know which branch of M222?

Do we know which branch of M222?

I don't. That M222+ result has been around for years. I don't know if kit 27706 has ever done any further SNP testing.

STRs may have something to tell us here. Morrison 27706 shares a number of STR values with McGowen 262194 that differentiate both men from the M222 Modal Haplotype.

Both have DYS392=15 instead of modal 14; DYS447=26 instead of modal 25; DYS449=29 instead of modal 30; DYS464b=15 instead of modal 16; DYS576=20 instead of modal 18; DYS570=16 instead of modal 17; and CDYa=37 instead of modal 38.

The two haplotypes differ by one at DYS460 and by two at GATA H4. Over 25 markers they stand at a genetic distance from one another of 0; over 37 markers, a genetic distance of 3. In both cases, McGowen is the one who deviates from the M222 Modal Haplotype.

McGowen is a Big Y Tester; he belongs to R-DF109. My suspicion is that this particular Morrison lineage should be grouped there as well.

McGowen is a member of the R-M222 and Subclades Project at FTDNA, and his haplotype can be observed there. The Morrison in question is not a member of that project, but his haplotype can be seen at the link posted higher in this thread.

Update for those who may be interested. I just noticed that the McGowen who matches Morrison 27706 got revised Big Y results last year and is now assigned to R-FGC23742. I suspect that the same result would apply to the Morrison in question. A different Morrison who doesn't match 27706 particularly closely at 37 markers and below (GD of 1 at 12, no matches reported at 25 and 37) is also assigned to R-FGC23742. Despite this, the shared non-modal M222 values support my continuing willingness to consider a possible connection.

R-FGC23742 lies one step below R-DF109. It is one of the smallest sub-haplogroups of that major haplogroup. There are only 20 known members in the YFull tree. YFull estimates the MRCA for them at 1450 ybp.
