It's more interesting to look at the ones with all 4 grandparents from these places. Often, those people still live in that country - or at the very least, you know your shared ancestry is probably from that country (excluding USA/Canada matches).

It's interesting, but I'm not sure how useful it really is. The reason is, nearly all of my ancestors arrived in America during the British colonial period. That's why the large majority of my DNA Relatives who have provided ancestry info are from the U.S.

Most other countries in this list only have 10 or fewer persons. Only the U.K., Canada, Germany, and Ireland, have more than that. All of these actually are countries from which I have ancestry, but they're also countries which have had a lot of emigration to the U.S.

In the group of countries with fewer than 10 DNA Relatives each, I also noticed that only one of them included anyone with all four grandparents from the same country. That was Australia, and it's only true for one of the three persons from Australia. She's on my father's side, and is predicted to be a 5th cousin.

If she's really a 5th cousin, it would mean they have at least one common 4th great grandparent. My father's 4th great grandparents do, as a group, include some who were not born in the U.S. or its British antecedent. Not many, but some.

Even in the larger groups (UK, 19; Canada, 13; Germany, 12; and Ireland, 11), there are very few with all four grandparents from that country. Even in the largest of these groups, there are just two with all four great grandparents from the same country. Both are on my mother's side; in fact, both are on my maternal grandfather's side. And whether or not all four grandparents are from the UK, it's pretty clear that both must have at least one American ancestor.

I guess it will be a useful tool for some, but my list doesn't even include the country of the ancestors who were the most recent arrivals to the U.S.: Spain. Both of my maternal grandmother's grandfathers were from the island of Menorca. But they aren't exactly "recent" arrivals, since each entered the U.S. before 1840 as a child accompanied by his parents and siblings.

One of my grandmother's grandmothers also entered the U.S. as a child with her family from Alsace-Lorraine. This was likewise before 1840, at a time when Alsace and Lorraine were actually separate (I think) and part of France. This region has also at times been German, and is now French again. But like Spain, France isn't in my list.

There is a certain West Balkan connection I was unaware of...

In my case it's a bit harder to figure out because so many people are from the Americas and so few from Spain, so I can only do some unreliable guesswork.

There's an overlap with former Spanish colonies which would seem improbable at first but it could simply be the case that 23andme is a lot more popular in Latin America than Spain. That or the wierd possibility that many Portuguese migrated to Spanish colonies. Alternatively, and I suppose this could make more sense than the previous one, they could be descended form Spanish colonists whose origins are relatively close to where my family's from. I checked surname frequency maps in INE of my Spanish matches, and pretty much all except one are more frequent in either Asturias/Leon or Galicia, which are also the closest Spanish regions to my area of ancestry - the other one is Catalan/Valencian. In FTDNA Y37 matches the surname result was the same. So the connection seems to be with NW Spain

Mine is also confusing because those 3 Irish and 2 British connections are close to 100% NW Euro. There isn't even a single drop in South and/or East Euro, which are my main components.

Looking more closely, 23andMe claims 4th cousins, 0.30% match, but on only one segment. Based on the common matches I recognize (few, but going to my common matches with common matches, which gets dubious), I think this match is more likely to be on my dad's side (which would make a Serbian match even less likely), but I'll have to do some work to confirm.

I have suprisingly many Ukrainian matches and many of them are Jewish/half/quater Jewish. My mother believed she has distant Jewish ancestry but her autosomal DNA doesn't not show any trace of Jewish admixture (neither does mine) yet she has some additional southernish input, which is more likely Greek. I wonder, if my suposed distant Jewish ancestry isn't real, why do I match quite a bit of Eastern European (especially Ukrainian) Jews or part Jews ?

I score 0.1% Ashkenazi on 23andme but 9.9% unassigned broadly European which is bit unusual (very high amount), I guess. She tested with FTDNA (2% middle eastern there) so I can't compare our scores.

23andme has me at 75%African, and 22% European i have Portuguese ancestry, and identify with my Portuguese roots over my other ancestries, so I'm looking forward to finding the record of my Portuguese ancestors. All of my Portuguese matches are mostly mixed with other Europeans are 2nd-generation Portuguese-Americans

Following up with this, based on common matches/overlapping matches, it appears that the match is on my dad's paternal grandmother's side, which makes no obvious sense. Maybe I'll email the person.

The US results are mostly individuals of either Iranian, European or Jewish ancestry. About half of them are people with some Iranian heritage (half are fully so). The Americans with European ancestry are all 4th-5th cousins and we're all sharing a single segment (0.10-0.14%).

I was expecting the matches from Germany to be predominantly through West Asian-descent or Jewish individuals, but they're mostly fully European. Again, only a single segment is shared with them all (except for those with some Iranian ancestry).

With the Turkish matches, they're currently a near-even mix of Turkish and Kurdish. I'm only sharing one segment with each. The matches with Levantine (+Iraq) and East European individuals are either fully (former) or partially (latter) due to shared Jewish ancestry.

A good chunk of these matches (particularly those with full European Gentiles) appear to be in segments near (or at) highly conserved areas of the chromosomes, so I'm currently attributing those British, German, Irish, Russian, Romanian etc. matches to older shared ancestry.

Jessie

They aren't really countries of ancestry but just where your matches ancestors are born. It would most likely be more instructive to limit it to countries where all 4 grandparents are born but it doesn't mean you necessarily have ancestry from those countries which I'm sure most people here realise anyway.

23andMe gives me a highley likley for areas in Lebanon that my family comes from, mostly the north and mount lebanon. In the south the link is far weaker so it makes sense and leads me to believe that they are accurate with their information. However, 23andMe also gives me a strong likely match to Tartus governorate in coastal Syria, I have zero knowledge on any family from there in the last 200 years. Could this be some confusion or an interesting new discovery!?

It's interesting but I think it is incorrect and misleading.
I get likely matches in Beirut, Beqaa gov, Amman, and Irbid. I'm pretty sure I don't have ancestry from any of these places in the past 200 years. My recorded tree goes back over 300 years from the same town and no outsiders.
I think 23andme references included Palestinians living in Lebanon and Jordan and that's how it picked up a likely match.

The high number of Eastern European countries is due almost entirely to a very small degree of Ashkenazi ancestry (0.4%).

Ruderico
01-29-2019, 04:11 PM
Are you sure? 0.4% is something really small, it seems odd it would give you so many matches. How far back have you traced your ancestors?

Are you sure? 0.4% is something really small, it seems odd it would give you so many matches. How far back have you traced your ancestors?

Yes I'm sure. See below - I share only 0.12% of my DNA with the match below, an American Jew named M. Klein, and yet I have 348 relatives in common with him, and most of them (about 70%) share with me the same section of my DNA that I share with him. It's a segment of chromosome 12 that I got used to thinking of as "my Jewish segment" because since I first received my results in 2011, I think, it brings me many such matches. Getting a new Jewish match on chromosome 12 is as boring as getting a match from Brazil; it just happens too much.

For comparison, my closest relative on my list of relatives is a Brazilian girl who seems to be a third cousin of mine, but with her I only have 43 relatives in common, less than 15% of my matches with the Klein dude.

28679
28680

I never really cared much about researching my ancestors, because I doubt very much that such research would be very fruitful. Poor Brazilians with deep roots in the colonial past do not tend to keep the kinds of documents needed to do this research. This type of research is easier for those who are of recent immigrant origin.

Ruderico,

No, I just read about it on topics that referred to Ashkenazis, but that's pretty much it. I'm not even totally sure it's real, although judging by these sort of results it does seem to be the case

Thanks Ruderico. I kept in mind a bottleneck about 1,000 years ago without remembering the cause, but for this one it"s the first time i read something about a period so recent. A bottleneck
after the last world war would be less surprising.
Agamemnon probably knows the reason if this one is real

I think so, it might be best not to quote me on it, since I'm just going from memory from a secondary (at least) source, both potentially not too accurate

I can not find where this is indicated on the 23&me site!
Can you tell me where it is?

23andMe gives me a highley likley for areas in Lebanon that my family comes from, mostly the north and mount lebanon. In the south the link is far weaker so it makes sense and leads me to believe that they are accurate with their information. However, 23andMe also gives me a strong likely match to Tartus governorate in coastal Syria, I have zero knowledge on any family from there in the last 200 years. Could this be some confusion or an interesting new discovery!?

I still want to know what these likely areas mean. Does it mean you likely have ancestors from there who are typical to that area or does it just mean you likely have ancestors from there who might not by very typical. In regards to you, I dont know if your match to Tartus means you have typical Syrian ancestors or if Tartus has some Lebanese people who are close to you.

The consensus atm is that it means that people who are related to you listed those regions as their regions of ancestry. Which means there could be sample bias, that is certainly the case with Portugal

Add this to the URL (/reports/dna_family)

But it's a bit superficial since a lot of new worlders are included in the results.

In regards to you, I dont know if your match to Tartus means you have typical Syrian ancestors or if Tartus has some Lebanese people who are close to you.

The maps seem to appear only for areas which already had "recent ancestor locations", so I'm assuming they're basically from same data. The Scientific Details page goes to this in some detail:

"To determine these results, we look for identical pieces of DNA that you have in common with individuals of known ancestry from around the world. Each recent ancestor location has its own unique demographic history, so we've calibrated our algorithm to better reflect these differences. For a given recent ancestor location, we indicate our confidence in the result, reported as "possible match," "likely match," or "highly likely match." If we are not able to detect recent ancestry from a location with confidence, we report this to you as "not detected."

The maps on your Ancestry Detail Reports are a visual representation of your recent ancestor locations down to the state and county level. A map is generated by aggregating the ancestral origins of individuals who share a minimum amount of DNA with you. Your results are a living analysis and will improve over time as more people with known ancestry join our gene pool."

This does still leave a number of details open, though, like are the locations based on current location of the DNA match or do the four grandparents have to be from same region? What kind of quality control is applied to ensure the user entered locations are correct for recent ancestor locations? (The quality control for the basic ancestry composition is detailed onr elevant pages) Does the DNA have to match on a region matching the appropriate ethnicity, or does any DNA match suffice? On the other hand, "Each recent ancestor location has its own unique demographic history, so we've calibrated our algorithm to better reflect these differences." suggests they're trying to address "sample bias" but can only work with the data they have.
