Looking for a surname expert,if there is one here.Levenie/ Leveny/Leveney /Leveni/leaveny/leavnie/levney/Levnie/Levenee.

They all sound very similar. Levenie/Leveny/Levney and Levnie are surname variants of known ancestors who came from Banffshire,Scotland. Leveni/Leveney possibly Jewish. I am trying to trace an ancestral origin for the surname of my Banffshire ancestors who were fisherman

Levenie/Leveny/Levney and Levnie are surname variants of known ancestors who came from Banffshire, Scotland.

The Oxford Book of English Surnames has Leven/Levens in Scotland as from Leven (Fife, Renfew), not to be confused with the English version, from place-names in England incorporating the Old English personal name Leofa. In Scotland, the place-name Leven is probably taken from a Celtic river name.

Here is the Leven in Fife: http://www.gazetteer.org.uk/view.php?placeid=26110
There is also a Levenvale and/or Vale of Leven in Dunbartonshire: http://www.gazetteer.org.uk/view.php?placeid=47256
There is also Leven Seat in Midlothian: http://www.gazetteer.org.uk/view.php?placeid=26113
There are also various place-names in Scotland incorporating Leven, such as Achaleven, Argyllshire; Auchleven, Aberdeenshire; Kinlochleven, Argyllshire. And Loch Leven itself: http://www.visitlochleven.org/

I believe the previous Scotland football (soccer) manager, Craig Levein, is a Fifer. I am sure I once googled it a genealogy site like the LDS and found the name had been there a long time.
