View Full Version : Regional Geographic patterns associated with U152 haplogroups

Collected 1007 U152 samples from publicly available sources with duplicate surnames in same SNP block removed. FTDNA was primarily source, with just over 200 samples from others sources.

293 samples from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales (United Kingdom)
192 samples from Italy
107 samples from Germany
85 samples from France
68 samples from Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg (BENELUX)
50 samples from Spain and Portugal (Iberia)
42 samples from Switzerland
37 samples from Ireland
32 samples from Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia (Central Europe)
32 samples from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Ukraine (Eastern Europe)
31 samples from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland (Baltic)
29 samples from Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden (Nordic)
9 samples from other countries

1007 U152 samples
654 L2 samples
125 Z49 samples
78 Z142 samples

After sorting them, I created some graphs showing the percentage each region contributed to some select U152 haplogroups (U152>L2>Z49>Z142>Z150) to see if any patterns emerged. I arranged the graphs in the image below to be in rough geo-spatial relationship to one other e.g. Eastern Europe on the far right (East) and Ireland on the far left (West).

What stood out in the eastern geographic regions was the progressive drop in percentages as one moved from older to newer SNP blocks
For example in the Baltic and Eastern Europe regions there is drop off of contribution as one moves from U152 to L2 to Z49, to Z142 to Z150. The same was true for Germany and Switzerland as Z36 is a major contributor to these countries. Italy (Z56 is is a major factor here) and Ireland showed a similar pattern with currently no Z142 nor Z150 samples in Ireland.

The Nordic region has it's highest percentage in the Z49 branch, This is primarily in the Z49+ Z142- SNP blocks.

Central Europe, Iberia, and BENELUX regions were roughly the same percentages across these SNP blocks

While the United Kingdom and France showed increasing percentages of contribution as the SNP blocks became younger.

Is there a correlation between these graphs and the migratory path of this particular U152 branch i.e a generally westward direction over time?

As to why there is a different pattern in the UK vs Ireland, it may indicate that this branch was associated with groups that made it to Britain but didn't travel on to Ireland e.g. Hallstatt, La Tene, Belgae, Romans etc.

It seems to show that Z142's main path to Britain was the most direct, across the Rhine and through France, not down the Rhine to Benelux or Scandinavia. As for the paucity of Z142 men in Ireland, could this be due to a relatively late crossing to Britain (1066 or later)?
