My wife knows almost nothing about her family heritage, though now and again she's been mistaken for being part Native American. As we've grown curious about her background over the years, we finally decided to have a test done with 23andme and, after a long drawn out process that started just over sixty days ago, we finally received her maternal haplogroup this weekend.

Apparently she belongs to haplogroup U5b1b1. As I understand it, this haplogroup is primarily comprised of basques and the Saami. Trouble is, without 23's autosomal results (and who knows when those will come in) I'm not sure that this provides any real insight.

So I exported her data and ran it through GedMatch and came up with the following admix results. Although I'm entirely new to all this, it seems obvious to me that there's plenty of German ancestry present. However in addition to that, I am seeing bits of Norwegian and Swedish. Could those be indicative of a minuscule Saami heritage, or is her maternal haplogroup causing me to look for something that isn't there?

Haplogroup U5b1b1 is far from being exclusively a Saami haplogroup. U5b1b1 is also present in others parts of Northern and Western Europe, Northern Asia and Northwestern Africa

Some Saami apparently were absorbed into (Germanic) Norwegian society over the centuries, especially the indigenous portion that were spread down into Norway itself. U5b1b1 also looks to be Finnish. So Forest Finns in Sweden and Norway could also be a source. So one might look into any Norwegian elements with that U5b1b1 haplogroup in one's family tree.
