I have a friend who tested with the FTDNA YDNA-12 test a while ago and since the results were out I have been puzzled what to make of them. The assigned haplogroup is J-M267. Below is the full haplotype. Notice the exceptionally low value for DYS392! Any ideas of whether this might be a mistake or whether indeed you may get J1s with such low values in DYS392? Also, any ideas of specific SNPs to test?

Marker DYS393 DYS390 DYS19 DYS391 DYS385 DYS426 DYS388 DYS439 DYS389I DYS392 DYS389II
Value 12 23 14 9 10-19 11 16 12 13 6 30

DYS392-6 is extremely rare, but possible if it's not an error.

Thanks a lot. I have also noticed in YHRD that DYS392=6 is a possible result. I can see you are very experienced in J1 haplotypes. Have you ever come across anything like this? This haplotype has 0 matches in FTDNA. Do you think I should test for the P58 SNP or is it more likely that this haplotype belongs to one of the rarer subclades of J1?

You can try J1 SNP Pack from FTDNA or J1-M267 YSEQ Super Clade Panel. You can increase the STR markers but DYS392 will probably not show matches. If you are really interested Big Y or FGC can show the proper correct place on the phylogenetic tree.

Would you be able to disclose where in Cyprus the individual is from originally, or their parents?

The person is Greek Cypriot and the origin of the haplogroup is Limassol. Do you have any suggestions on his possible paternal ancestry? We will most likely go with the FTDNA J1 SNP Pack, so I will inform you of new results here.

Would be hard to tell unless I knew the guys name/family. Limossol is a very very old city. I typically see E1b1 Haplogroups among Cypriots, R1b, and some J1/J2/I/G scattered about.

I wish I saw more Turkish Cypriot Paternal Haplogroup results.

Go for the SNP pack, that's probably the best option available.
