Hello-

I added Y-DNA 12 to my Family Finder kit this evening and I was curious how long it will take for the results. I do not need to send another sample.

Thank you!

My dad's YSTR37 came in surprisingly quickly, just a few weeks. OTOH, my mtDNA full is taking a lot longer, looks like it will be more than two months.

I've done Y12 during this holiday sale, and it took only 2 weeks. Family Finder also took only 2 weeks in October.

The BigY test I purchased in November came back in a surprisingly fast 2 weeks. When I got FF back in June it took a month before I got the results.

Is Y12 worth/enough? i wish to know my haplogroup, im not interested in finding relatives.

STR are not a good way to get haplogroups, Y12 would let them maybe guess at a very, very basic backbone group at best and by the time you add in STR32 and 67 upgrades to get a better group or backbone SNP packs, the cost is more than a whole new basic $99 23 test or even $149 Geno 2.0 NG test (which gives you the nicest presentation of haplogroup info and walk it step by step out of Africa).

Of course eventually getting to an advanced SNP pack and especially big Y from FTDNA gives you the most detailed haplogroup info of all but that does cost some money, especially the later which costs a real lot, like hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

I have 12 markers now and I only know that I'm R1a, TMCRA 18400 y.b.p. If you want to know all the information, order Y12 + Big Y on a sale.

I jumped from Y12 to v13 snp test, and I'm confirmed now to be v13!

If you don't mind me asking, how much was Y12 in the holiday sale. Currently it's 59 $. And I'm planning add to Family Finder kit like you did.
Are you satisfied with what you have from Y12?
Thanks.

I ordered Y12 at New Year sale for $39 (used $20 coupon). Y12 isn't enough in most cases. I know that I'm R1a, but I don't even know if I belong to European Z283 or Asian Z93, so I'm not satisfied. If you want to know your subclade, you should order at least 37 markers, and NGS tests like Big Y or Y Elite are still irreplaceable. 12 markers will give you very little information.

A Y-DNA12 customer has several alternatives:
1) Order the Big Y during a discount sale.
2) Order an upgrade to 37 or more markers.
3) Order a high-level ("backbone") SNP pack.

Where's the option to buy a 12 STR Y-DNA test - Would you have to first submit an FTDNA kit?

All I see available are options for 37, 67 and 111:

Any surname or geographical project, including Project Pending (https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Project_Pending), offers the Y-DNA12 option for new customers.

An existing customer (e.g., who initially ordered only Family Finder) should be able to order Y-DNA12 via the blue Upgrade button in his account.

I've started with Family Finder by testing at the beginning of May, then I decided to have YDNA12 as well in order to know about my Haplogroup.

FTDNA has received my kit on 7th of June, and I am still waiting for the results.

The question in my mind is that if it is better to have Y37/Y67 or SNP pack.
I am not really looking for having close matches. Instead I wish to know about the subclade information if Y12 is not providing.

As I said before, I haven't gotten my results back for the haplogroup info.

But let's assume it's G-M201.

SNP Pack for this and many other haplogroups listed as $119.
Instead of having Y37 upgrade from Y12 with the cost of $99, I can have SNP pack for G-M201.

Can anyone make a comparison of Y37/Y67 upgrade versus SNP pack?

My ultimate purpose is to able to confirm Adyghea ethnic origin in my paternal line, looking at just last 200 years.

I sent back my samples today for "Y37", so now looking forward on seeing how this will help me refine my haplogroup result of R-Z283 which I got from LivingDNA.

I don't think Y37 will refine the haplgroup at all. Y-STR is for matching and it's very low level and kind of rough for haplgroup guesstimating.
