What can we say about the origins of G-L497?
One ancient DNA sample from Mitterkirchen Austria (grave I-8), from the Early Iron Age Hallstatt Culture c. 700 BCE, published by Kiesslich et al. (2009), has a 12 STR haplotype that *may* match various G-Z725s (G-L497s) , although it also may match some G-Z1903s or even G-PF3359s.
The Hallstatt Culture was almost certainly Celtic, but we know now it wasn't the first Celtic culture in Europe. It may have something to do with the P-Celts, including the Belgae and Britons. At the same time, the core Hallstatt and later La Tene regions had Raetian speakers, and the predecessor to the Hallstatt Culture, the Urnfield Culture, was also the predecessor to the Villanovan Culture of the early Etruscans.
Below is the haplotype and the tested YHRD SNPs for the modern matches, who are all G. Also, there is a table of matching G haplotypes from Rootsi (2012), where you can see that only about half of them are actually G-L497.
Rootsi et al. (2013) G Haplotypes Worldwide (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uFG7mk7kAWDYFrLKluTh1oO6NfOXosphFNFQhkqek2Y/edit#gid=343325761)
Also, there are maps of present-day matches. (The Chinese match will be the subject of a separate post.) The most common region for matches is Northern Italy, Switzerland, and the Low Countries, typical for G-L497 - but no matches in Austria.
This "Celtic" society might have been the predecessor of the various "Germanic" tribes over the Rhine (Germani cisrhenani) that Julius Caesar describes who had leaders with Celtic names, or the Celtic Belgae of northern Gaul, who may have been a mixed Celto-Germanic group. The Hallstatt and La Tene Cultures may also have been the predecessors of the later Germanic Suebi, Marcomanni, and related South German tribes.
So if this is some specific subclade of G-L497 (G-L42 or G-S2808, among others) then it could give us a big clue about how parts of G-L497 spread across central Europe, or it may be G-Z1903 or even G-L1266. Hopefully we'll have other ancient G samples with SNP testing that will give us the answer.

G-L497 is concentrated along the Rhine river. Almost every G-L497 subclade is found there, and the tMRCAs even within these branches almost all date no later than the Bronze Age (2,500 BCE - 1000 BCE). This means that there was already a diverse group of G-L497s in the region among the local tribes before the Roman Empire. Which historic tribes could the many G-L497 people belonged to? We can look at a map of the Rhine river tribes of the Roman Era and compare it the distribution of the G-L497 ancestors of people today from the same region.

Were some G-L497 people Raetian speakers?
Raetian is a pre-Indo-European language related to Etruscan, which was spoken in the ancient Austrian and Italian Tyrol, and eastern Switzerland. The Tyrsenian languages, Etruscan, Raetian, and Lemnian from the Island of Lemnos in the Aegean, may have been much more widespread before the Indo-Europeans arrived in Europe. If some Ancient G people spoke Tyrsenian languages, were these languages the languages of the G people in Neolithic Europe?

The royal burial from Mitterkirchen in northern Austria from 700 BCE (the Early Iron Age) is from the Hallstatt culture, which is thought to be the beginning of the Celtic Iron Age in Europe. However, this burial slightly predates the arrival of the Celts in the region around 400 BCE. His haplotype matches many G-L497s, in particular G-L42s. Berger et al. (2013) found an extremely high percentage of G-L497 in certain valleys in the Austrian Tyrol, as high as 30% of all Y haplotypes in the Paznaun Valley. Some of these match the Mitterkirchen haplotype. The region was part of the Iron Age Fritzens-Sanzeno culture, which alongside the Magre Group to the south, has Raetian language inscriptions, and the Camunnic language of the Val Camonica Group was probably Raetian. The Alpine Rhine Valley Group may have also spoken Raetian.

G-L497 spread from Italy to Northern Europe as early as the Bronze Age in 1800 BCE, so only a few G-L497s were Raetian or Etruscan speaking in the Iron Age. However, it's possible that when the various G-L497 clades spread out around 2200-1300 BCE they and the other European Neolithic Gs spoke Tyrsenian languages, even though they would have adopted the Indo-European languages of the majority of the people in Northern Europe when they arrived. It's also possible that a Tyrsenian language was spoken along the entire Rhine river from Switzerland to the Netherlands until the Late Iron Age, because this is where the G-L497s are concentrated.

Here is a map that shows the Alpine matches to Mitterkirchen in red, the regions that are over 30% G-L497 in blue, and shows the Iron Age cultures superimposed on the map. (Very small blue dots mean there are samples tested but there are no matches to Mitterkirchen.) Notice that many G-L497s and Mitterkirchen matches are concentrated in the Raetian-speaking regions Fritzens-Sanzeno, Magre Group, Val Camonica Group, and Alpine Rhine Valley Iron Age cultural regions:

It is found mostly in Tyrol ( 79.80% of this marker in Austria is in Tyrol ) and in Veneto Italy ............and others ( see map in link )

Rhaetic was once linked to etruscan, but that was only due to the use of the Euoboen alphabet, latest is

The Raeti appear to have learned the art of writing from the Veneti rather than the Etruscans (Schumacher 2004: 312–316). While Raetic inscriptions are only known from the 5th century onward, at a time when Etruscan inscriptions have appeared in the very North , some features of the Raetic script strongly suggest a Venetic source.

As in Venetic, different alphabet variants are used for writing the Raetic language. Some of the similarities with Venetic can only be demonstrated for the Magrč alphabet, which appears to be close to the Archaic Venetic alphabet, although the use of (somewhat idiosyncratic) syllabic punctuation indicates an acquaintance with a phase 2 Venetic source. It is not yet clear whether or inhowfar all Raetic alphabet variants are derived from the same model. It cannot be excluded that different Venetic varieties, and maybe to some extent also Etruscan or even Celtic writing practice, have influenced Raetic writing. One common feature of the Raetic alphabets, three-bar Mu M s, is reminiscent of the Venetic Vicenza alphabet,

With this.....a genetic link of your G-L497 is accepted ( linguistically and genetically ( with my added link ))

L497 has probably something to with Kum6 folks rather than the most earliest G2as.
It can be Raetian.

Thanks for the info! I am very new to this haplogroup and admittedly, the only reason I am here is because of a recent discovery which showed that a distant ancestor belonged to this group. Add my ancestor to the list of German G-L497's.

Ancestor in question was a Johann Adam Rexroat (Rexerodt) born 1770 in Frankfurt, Hessen, Germany.

L140-L497-Z1815-L42!
Also, It's officially, Vinca culture is G2a (L497) !
According to newest study of 127 European Neolithic samples 'Parallel ancient genomic transects reveal complex population history of early European farmers'' (http://biorxiv.org/content/early/2017/03/06/114488), 2 ancient DNA samples from Vinca culture in present day Hungary were:
G2a2b2a1a and G2a2a.
As you know, G2a2b2a1 is ancestor of L497 and it's branches.
Here in Serbia we have two branches which coming from G2a2b2a1, L497 (most of our G2a belongs to it) and U1 , so we definitely can
say that modern day Serbs with that haplogroups are descendant of Vinca people.

Actually this is G-L42!
When you copy original text from Excel and paste it in Word it's G2a2b2a1a1b1a1a1:L42:16660759C->A
So it's L42, not only L43! :beerchug:

Here is a newly-updated version of the SNP chart for the L43 branch of G-L497. This includes results from the two most-recent BigY tests, which discovered the new SNPs G-Z44139 (a Swiss branch under Y11074) and G-Z44672 (a Swedish branch under YSC33).

Several points of interest. The L43+, L42- branch has an Iberian component, with membership from Spain and Portugal, as well as France and Italy. It is not clear if this Iberian presence is of ancient origin or could be related to more recent migrations into Iberia from central Europe during the Middle Ages.

The YSC33 section continues to expand with new testing results, and includes an interesting Balkan component, but YSC33 is also found as far as Sweden to the north and in France and Netherlands to the West. The other main branch under G-L42 (Y11076) is apparently not found in eastern Europe, but rather has representation in Switzerland, Italy, France and Norway. In general the geographic spread of the Y11076 subclades is not as large as that seen with YSC33.

It continues to seem that the “homeland” of G-L42” is likely the Alps area, extending from southern Germany, across Switzerland and into northern Italy. This the region with greatest diversity of L42 subclades and is central to L42 from a geographical perspective. However, a recent study reports that, of all ancient skeletons tested for YDNA so far, the earliest G-L497 is a G-L42 found in Ukraine, and is dated to roughly 5000 to 5600 years before present. So there is still much to learn about the origins of G-L497 and G-L42, and the time estimates we currently have may be subject to significant revisions.

Thanks to all G-L43 and G-L42 persons who have done recent testing that makes possible the development and continuing revision of our shared YDNA family tree.

Good morning, my name is Fabrizio I live in the province of Verona, I love the genealogy for years, I did the pedigree tree from father until about 1380 always inhabited here where I live, and by mother until 1450 and lived to 15 Km from where we live, and my last name is here in Verona since about 1100, I made the DNA test with Living dna thinking of 37 markers, the result G2a2b2a1b-G-Z1817 final G-Z725 .... I saw that it is Spread in the Swiss and Austrian alps, then in Bavaria and Germans, we are also in Great Britain, Scotland and Scotland, as I can see if there are genetic cousins? Where can I look? Thank you and many greetings.

Hi everyone, I am new here. I got my father's Y DNA haplogroup recently and am trying to find out what I can. My dad's surname was incorrect, passed on from a dead husband. So finding a paper trail on his actual male line has been difficult. I'm fairly sure the line migrated to the US from Great Britain, however. I'd really like to know more about the ancient groups we may have descended from. Thank you all for the info posted here, I am going to scroll through. Is anyone else in the US with this subgroup?

Hi all, my dad's family can be traced back to at least the early 1500's in North Brabant, Netherlands. They are G L497 as tested with 23andme.
It's good to be here for the more detailed information.

so if the majority of G-L497 is descended from a Cucuteni Trypillian lineage, how is it mostly around the Alps? L497 ---> Z579 starts to diversify around 2600BC, imediatly after the collapse of Cucuteni Trypillia.

did they really move to central Europe after the collapse ?

I noticed that only Rolf Langland's Chart A has been uploaded here, and with a picture rather than a link (so updates of the chart don't replace it). There are currently three charts for separate, major branches below G-L497. These have been keyed to results from SNP Packs, and more recently results from BigY tests, at FTDNA. It is likely that there is some other known branching below G-L497, especially if it is recently discovered or refined. I haven't looked for it (it's my brother-in-law's haplogroup, not my own). Logical places to look might be FGC, YFull, and websites or papers from any group that is sequencing or analyzing modern or ancient YDNA elsewhere than at FTDNA.

Each of Rolf's charts is a work in progress, sometimes rapid progress. So here are links that should bring up the most recent update of each:

I'm closer to think that L497 folks from the steppes were massacred by IE's than assimilated. For me it's more logical that they were assimilated in the Central Europe and the Alps than in the Steppe.

Hope that study that coming in future (Genetic transition in the Swiss Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age) will tell us more.

Yeah, the assimilation scenario didn't cross my mind, that's very possible.

I don't know how the map maker of Eupedia makes his maps, but if the frequency in Italy is correct, it matches Etruscan territory, that language is connected to Rhaetian, which is Alpine, I don't make the claim that they were all G-L497, but it was one of their lineages.

There must have been conflict, but I think a plague from the Steppe played a more decisive role.

I took the Ydna 37 . heres a comparision between 12 and 36. Most of the matches in Y37 are ruthenian based in ukraine / poland ( plus a random one from Portugal and north ireland ).31552

I also put my YSTRS into haplotype predictors. Most came to being 100 percent positive L497

If your marker DYS388=13 then yes, you are G-L497. Did you test at FTDNA? If so you can join the project there to see if there is a close 37 marker match for further refinement.

On the 37 marker, only 6/10 on my 37 were part of the G-l497 Group . Closest surname is petrosky and watso by marker 2 -3. Other than that mostly Gm201 besides one G-Z41143 and G-Z17780

On the 37 marker, only 6/10 on my 37 were part of the G-l497 Group . Closest surname is petrosky and watso by marker 2 -3. Other than that mostly Gm201 besides one G-Z41143 and G-Z17780

What I meant was that if you look at the STR marker DYS388, if the value there is the number 13, then you are in haplogroup G-L497. Those other two SNP's you mentioned are part of the CTS4803 branch which is more refined than L497, where did you see them?

ah . I checked DYS388 and it is indeed 13. both on the CTS4803 branch were on my 37 markers at step 4.

Heres my full STRS if interested

Great, glad to have another L497 out there! Please log into FTDNA and join the G-L497 Y-DNA project. They will then add your 37 marker results to the project roster.

Z17780 is downstream of CTS4803 and an eastern European branch with a mrca 3300 ybp. Our FTDNA project has members in that branch from Ukraine, Austria, Italy, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland. Did you send a request to join the project?
