I am negative for everything below this on the current FTDNA tree. It seems fairly rare, so I am guessing no further downstream SNP Packs will be developed and Big Y is my only option? Any further information appreciated. Does anyone know the approximate age? TIA.

A287 is a branch of Z2185. The SNP path is Z253>Z2534>ZZ5>Z2185>A287. There are three other branches of Z2185 which are parallel to A287, including Z2186, which goes downstream to to L1066 and CTS9881 (Irish Type 4). I suspect most estimates would have A287 as at least 3000 years old.

You are negative for BY4294 and BY4295, which define a branch of A287 dominated by the Ramsey surname. You are also negative for FGC42861 and FGC42867, which define another branch of A287, this one dominated by the Sullivan surname. Both these branches appear to be Scottish and/or Irish. You are also negative for another eleven downstream SNPs which occur in a third branch of A287, which includes the surnames Hunter, Smith and Bain/Bayne (Irish/Scot/Eng). Then there is a Scandinavian A287 branch which has not tested Big Y and so does not have defining SNPs at this stage.

You do not have any close STR matches who are A287+, or even Z253+, so you may be on your own branch of A287 at this stage. However you do have some STR matches at 67 markers who have not done SNP testing (predicted R-M269 haplogroup) and a couple who are L21+ but have not tested downstream SNPs.

So Big Y or another NGS test (FGC Elite) is your best option. Ideally you should also contact your close STR matches and see if any of them are interested in SNP testing, initially with just a single SNP test such as A287, which is inexpensive. You really need two Big Y tests to define a new branch by comparing the testers' shared novel SNPs.

Thank you. Sorry for the tardy response. I have not been checking the messages lately.

I am curious about my one Young match, but have not been in contact with him recently. I am also curious about my several more distant Morris matches. I am unclear if I am a Morris or they are Youngs.

I have my eye on Big Y, but have been waiting. Not sure for what. A price reduction was mentioned by Bennett quite some time ago, but the queue seems so long that there is no reason for them to lower the price.

Big Y results are posted. R-A287, as expected, no matches and 41 unnamed variants. Waiting on my Big Tree analysis to complete, but expect the same. No luck in encouraging matches to test further.
