This population has been something of interest with its insistence of popping up in my gedmatch oracles. No, not one or two mentions. It as either simply Basque, Spanish Basque or French Basque, is quite common in some of the oracles.

Such as my eurogenes K15

Using 3 populations approximation:
1 50% French_Basque +25% Irish +25% West_Scottish @ 4.095163

Using 4 populations approximation:
1 French_Basque + Irish + West_Scottish + West_Scottish @ 3.718355
2 French_Basque + Orcadian + West_Scottish + West_Scottish @ 3.721640
3 Danish + West_Scottish + Irish+ Orcadian @ 3.774484
4 Danish + French_Basque + West_Scottish + West_Scottish @ 3.789561
5 French_Basque + Irish + West_Scottish + Orcadian @ 3.829794

Mixed Populations
1 80.8% West_Scottish + 19.2% French_Basque @ 3.04
2 82.6% Irish + 17.4% French_Basque @ 3.4
3 77.3% Orcadian + 22.7% French_Basque @ 3.4
4 86.4% Southeast_English + 13.6% French_Basque @ 3.57

&

EuTest
Using 3 populations approximation:
1 50% Cornish +25% French_Basque +25% IE @ 4.061717

Using 4 populations approximation:
1 Cornish + French_Basque + IE + IE @ 3.393178
2 French_Basque + IE + IE + NO @ 3.455667
3 French_Basque + IE + IE + IE @ 3.618394
4 Cornish + French_Basque + IE + Orcadian @ 3.649296
5 Cornish + French_Basque + IE + Scottish @ 3.703419

Mixed Population
1 82.3% IE + 17.7% French_Basque @ 2.7
2 79.4% Orcadian + 20.6% French_Basque @ 3.42

I've seen it in other people of similar UK/Irish heritage, however, unless I missed someone not quite to the same degree. Hence my interest. Does anyone know who or what is being used as a reference? Legitimate Basque people? Basque skeletal remains?

They are modern basques. on Eurogenes K15 the basques peak for the Atlantic component, you probably have higher than average of this component, that's why Orcales adds basques into the mix,

There aren't any Basque skeletal remains that are published and therefore none are used in any of the calculators. They are all modern Basque people that are used in the calculators. They are French Basque from Li et al. (HGDP).

There are some Basque results from the Aldaieta cemetery in the 6th century AD (early medieval period), but I don't think anyone has posted them anywhere. Maybe they are at Jean M's site?

I don't think they were tested for autosomal dna, so never mind.

I think it is quite common for lots of nationalities to get some Basque in their results. I don't think it means that the person has Basque ancestry because it is so common. I get a lot of Scandinavian and North Dutch in my results but I don't have any ancestry from there. I look on Gedmatch as trying to find the best fit for your dna. If you have a sibling tested they might get a different combination. Gedmatch is quite good for placing your dna in a certain area e.g. Northwest Europe but the population mixes should not be taken too literally. You might just have more ENF in your mix that gives you that Basque result.

On my LivingDNA map the only Continental Europe I get is Basque the rest of my European allocation is Britain and Ireland. I've had it on other calculators as well. John
