Hello, I have my mother (Patricia) and father's (Felipe) 23andMe haplogroup information below. How can I find out what percentage of Sephardic Jewish I am?

I've heard that some haplogroups for Sephardic Jews are:
J1, J2, R1a, E-M78, R1b, I
https://ethnicgenome.wordpress.com/2009/03/04/the-race-of-sephardic-jews/
https://blog.23andme.com/ancestry/23andme-helps-uncover-hidden-jewish-ancestry/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_E-M215_(Y-DNA)

I am E-M78 based on my father's haplogroup attached. How can I take that information further?

Thanks so much,
Denise

Do you score some Ashkenazi on your Ancestry Composition? If so, you almost certainly have a Jewish ancestor. Latin Americans (particularly Mexicans) tend to score some Ashkenazi admixture on 23andme, more so than modern Spaniards. Sephardic Jews show up as partially "Ashkenazi" on 23andme, and this is likely due to the ancient shared ancestry of these two main groups of European Jews.

The difficulty with directly relating your "Ashkenazi" percentage to an actual percentage of Sephardic ancestry is that fullblooded Sephardic Jews are only part "Ashkenazi" on 23andme, the rest of their ancestry falling under 23andme's Southern European, North African, and Middle Eastern components. In other words, if you score 1.0% Ashkenazi on 23andme, then if we attribute this to Sephardic ancestry it could mean that you have more like 4 - 6% Sephardic autosomal ancestry. But of course, that's far from an exact science and it's certainly not going to give you a 100% precise percentage.

I recall that Dr. Doug McDonald sometimes gave Latin Americans a percentage-wise breakdown of Spanish vs. Jewish vs. North African ancestry (presuming he could detect any Jewish ancestry in that particular individual) but of course even that's just going to be an estimate, and in any case I don't think he is running results anymore.

Do you have any Jewish 23andme results? Can you post them on here?

Ashkenazi of 23andme is for Ashkenazi not for Sephardies who are a bit different from the first ones. Anyway you are E-V13 who is common in Italy and the Balkans, while E1b1b of Jews is mostly E-M123 (who is also common in South Europe anyway).

The only admixture tool out there right now for Sephardic is DNA Tribes SNP Analysis. If you have Sephardic ancestry, you should at least have minor Ashkenazi admixture. If you believe you have a Sephardic ancestor you should also have Ashkenazi matches. If you don't have both, it's likely their is no Sephardic.

This is the result of a full-blooded Sephardic Jew from Morocco. As you can see, Sephardim score some Ashkenazi, but the rest of their ancestry goes into various other components. Nevertheless, a minor Ashkenazi score is the best indication for Latin Americans that they have some Jewish ancestors.

If you score some North African, that may very well be from Sephardic ancestors, although sometimes Latin Americans score elevated North African for other reasons (Canarian immigrant ancestors, etc.).
