Just how related are Nilotes and West-Africa A/Senegambians?

There's a lot of similarity between them, obviously fst ain't gonna cut it after all this time. Even hearing some mande-speakers was like listening to Dholuo...Blench's Niger-Saharan hypothesis comes to mind. I remember reading somewhere that they descend from the same population but I've seen contradicting perspectives. To me its like there's more in common linguistically, phenotypically, life-style between Senegambians and Western Nilotes/Central Sudanics than there is between Senegambians and however u wanna categorise that cline from Ghana down Cameroon and all the way... you already know the deal.
