    Deep Z381 Subclade Question

Lucky for me a male relative of my paternal grandmother has their results on FTDNA. Utilizing http://semargl.me I was able to check his matches. Also in a stoke of luck his nearest match has had Big-Y. Based on the results, the match's terminal SNP is R-A8551*. I can't find a TMRCA for this SNP (not on YFull?), but based on a GD of 5 at 67 STRs, think there is a good chance that my great grandfather would also fall under this SNP?

    Thanks for you help!

According to Yseq, A8551 is a subclade of S11477.

Can you ask your relative join the FTDNA R-U106 Haplogroup Project https://www.familytreedna.com/public/U106? This is the largest public repository of U106 results, and we are always encouraging more folks to join.

We do accept persons who have not SNP tested, but in many cases, we may remove a person who has not done any SNP testing if it appears they would not be U106+.* For folks who have tested at least 67 STR markers, DYS492=13 (vs. the ancestral value of 12) is strongly correlated with U106+. Over 95% of folk U106+ and tested DYS492 have a value of 13 (or above) while over 95% of P312+ (and P311+/U106-) folks and tested DYS492 have a value of 12 (or less). **

The U106 Project is collecting VCF/BED zip files of folks who have done the Big Y test and are doing a number of reports analyzing the results. Links to these reports can be found at: http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/~mcdonald/genetics.html
One of these reports does an estimate (with a 95% Confidence Interval) for each of the clades discovered in the Big Y.*** The result for A8551 is: A8551 946 AD (334 AD — 1424 AD)

    NOTES:
    * In many cases, folks who have a very small GD from folks who have SNP tested are accepted due to the small GD, and will not be removed for not doing any SNP testing.
** There are subclades of P312>U152 where the modal value of DYS492=14.
*** Technically, this report only estimates the TMRCA (Time of Most Recent Common Ancestor) for the individuals who submitted their VCF/BED zip file to the project. For the older clades (like U106 and its immediate subclades) it does not make any real difference, but for the smallest tested clades, the estimate may not accurately portray the true age for the clade.

While A8551 is a subclade (many levels below) Z381, the two clades fall into two different FTDNA SNP Pack tests. Z381 falls into the U106 (xL48 xZ156 xZ18) SNP Pack while A8551 currently falls into the Z156 SNP Pack. FTDNA is in the process of dividing up the Z156 SNP Pack into three parts, and A8551 would then fall into the DF96 SNP Pack.

Thanks! I checked and he does appear to be in the U106 Group under: ZZ[14] Branch of R-M269 undetermined.
