I just found some long-lost cousins on my mother's side via an Ancestry match of 411 cMs and may finally have a shot at finding out what my maternal grandfather's y-dna haplogroup was. This sale is popping up at just the right time.

I am an admin of several projects, and I did not receive notice of the sale either. I went ahead and sent out a bulk email to my project members telling them about the sale, however, and that bulk email was approved by FTDNA.

I also posted the sale on Facebook and have emailed a second cousin and a personal friend about it.

    Hi rivergirl,

Someone suggested in a Facebook group to send an email to groups@ftdna.com and ask them to fix it.

It sounded like there was some admins not receiving these types of emails.

This FTDNA sale has been good to me: two Big Y orders from close 111-marker matches with my surname and the promise of one more.

No big STR upgrades from the guys in my main project sitting at 37 markers, however. That seems to be the echelon where low interest and low motivation remain parked for years.

Please ask all of your matches at 37 and 67 STRs to upgrade their Y STRs now. They don't go on sale often and they are a good investment even if you don't have a lot of matches today. The Y STR database has hundreds of thousands of people. This tool years to develop so it is important to get people to upgrade while they are able to and are interested.

The cornerstone in building relationship groups in genetic genealogy is to compare people that are taking the same tests. STR panels test everyone very reliably at the exact same locations no matter what subclade.

Testing only 37 STRs can lead to false matches. Some like the high mutational sensitivity of 1-37 but this is exactly what can lead to errors of both false matches and missing matches. As testing penetration improves the birthday problem will set in for more and more surnames and haplogroups. This is where it only takes only 23 people in a room before one pair randomly has the same birthday. By 70 people the odds go up to 99%

The 68-111 panel has no multi copy STRs. These 68-111 markers are much smoother and selected specifically for genetic genealogy.

The full 1–111 marker set has a mutation about every three generations. This is great to add on top of SNP testing for further refinement of family lineages is using STR signature markers.

Incrementally upgrading to the full 111 helps people who can't afford the upfront expense of Big Y to target for the right SNPs. The other side of that is that people who have Big Y can afford to and need to upgrade to 111 so that others can find her SNPs more easily.

My own opinion is that such advice is highly dependent on ethnic origin, haplogroup, personal age and financial circumstances, etc. Please remember that plenty of men have no 37-marker matches at all--or only coincidental ones--and probably won't have any until after they're dead! Or, let us say, long after Y-STRs have become obsolete.

I do not want to encourage men with rare lineages (i.e., no meaningful matches) to waste their money on false hopes--money that would be better saved for something useful. Instead, I like to point out that full-Y testing (at the $395 discount price) is an enduring legacy that will continue to increase in knowledge and value with every passing year, not only to oneself but eventually to one's descendants.

As a reminder: I myself tested 67 markers over 11 years ago. (I later upgraded to 111.) I was promptly classified by Kenneth Nordtvedt as I2a-Dinaric --which, ironically, he could have done from only 12 markers anyway. Eleven years later, absolutely no progress has been made, and I do not foresee any in the reasonably near future.
