At last! Ancestry.co.uk results. Results of an East Anglian tester

Well it was a painful journey. Originally ordered in March, I just missed sale prices. First sample failed. Second sample failed. Third time lucky. I guess that Ancestry kits don't like my saliva, it's the first DNA test that I've taken which didn't pass first time. Neither do you appear to jump any queues each retest, it's back to the back of the queue each time. Three attempts!

So was it worth it? Well, actually yes. The results are surprisingly good, certainly much better than 23andMe's test. Better than FT-DNA My Origins. It lacks Living DNA's British resolution, but actually, the outlaying results are not far off. In addition, of course, I finally get the Genetic Communities feature. How did they work out for me? They get my East Anglian flavour perfect, although they miss other admixes in South Central England.

My background again. As the signature says, 279 recorded direct ancestors, of which 277 appear to have lived in South-East England, including around 75% or more here in East Anglia. Smaller English clusters in South Central England (Oxon / Berks), and Lincolnshire / Northants - and a 3 x great grandfather from Switzerland. My Y-DNA is SW Asian - perhaps around Iran, but it's been here in England long enough for any Asian evidence in autosomal DNA to be washed away on all tests taken so far. More details on my known or recorded ancestry, and other DNA test results linked in my signature.

So here are my Ancestry.co.uk results, at last!

(P.s yes, I know my name is there, but thanks!).

I'd say that the Genetic Communities feature passes my tests.

You say it's better than 23 and Me? Really? I tested with Ancestry and was very surprised (negatively) regarding their ethnicity estimate. I considered testing with 23 and Me next since I've heard they tend to be more accurate for Europeans. Maybe Ancestry is hit or miss... hm. Anyways, your results look great despite having such bad luck with the first attempts!

Yes, I do get better results with Living DNA, or either Ancestry.com or FT-DNA regards to my record, than I do with 23andme. Horses for courses, but the mighty 23 falls to 4th place with accuracy to my medievally admixed NW European ancestry.

Wow! I'm particularly impressed by your genetic communities, for me they are the highlight of Ancestry's test. In your case they did a great job on your ethnicity estimate too - something Ancestry seems to miss quite often on for others.
I think their Great Britain category is heavy on Southeastern English testers because mattychatty (unsure of exact username) got 99% or something crazy Great Britain and all his family are from Kent. It looks like it is the right sort of reference population for yourself.

The genetic communities piece really is awesome. I just wish my ancestry matches were more engaged so I could fully utilize the feature!

Although I definitely have problems with the Ancestry DNA ethnicity estimates for my family (my aunt getting 70% Europe West for example... wildly inaccurate) for myself it's still the second most accurate DNA test next to 23andme. If it can pin down that Norfolk is actually British as it has done, then that is definitely positive press for this test.

With early medieval admixture patterns as suggested by history and archaeology, it all fits perfect, with strong pull to the Continent (Anglo-Saxon, Anglo-Danish, and Normand-French) and Scandinavia (Anglo-Danish) overlapping SE England.

For most of us I think 23andme is the best one. I highly recommend it, especially if you're in the states and can buy their ancestry only kit. It's certainly the best in my case.
