Which DNA test gives best ethnicity results for South Asia?

    Hi,
Someone on another forum is trying to find out her South Asian ethnicity.
She has asked about which DNA test lab is best for that?
Or maybe you can recommend one of the ethnicity tests at GEDmatch.
I ask because you guys collectively have the expertise and I don't.
I will relay answers to her.

I prefer Ancestry DNA to 23andme. However, it doesn't always get your Y and mt DNA.

If she is curious about her South Asian caste Harappa World on Ged Match is excellent. G25 is there best at getting core ancestry, and ancestries from the Neolithic, Mesolithic or even more recent history.

Don't the V5 kits have trouble with Gedmatch needing conversions of all sorts?

Yes, but all you have to do is to convert from V5 (~52,000 SNPs) to V3 (~185,000 SNPs) using DNA kit studio. The oracles can be pretty different before and after. After conversion is much more accurate.

Agree with this and with the beta, the updates to South Asian reference pops just keep on coming. A lot of South Asian results are starting to slowly fall where they should by region. Considering your mixed background of South Asian groups, would you consider V5? The advanced chip or whatever might tease out the results better I would think.

For just the ethnicity estimates 23andMe provides by far the most accurate results. However, if she wants to use gedmatch or perhaps nMonte, Ancestry may be better.

Definitely 23andMe. Their detail on South Asian ethnicities is astounding, many companies are still just reporting ‘South Asian’ with nothing Else

FTDNA & Ancestry give better autosomal file for South Asians. Usually within own ethnic group the matchs come out better

Are there Pakistani companies like these for genetic testing?
