    Oh great!

Here in a few months we will have hundreds of thousands of new testees asking "why am I related to these people from Finland?" or "does having a Ashkenazi match mean that I am Jewish?".

The more, the merrier, I guess. Consumer genetic genealogy has become a big business.

I hope that many will find their way to gedmatch. How many kits does ancestry have at the moment ? Around 6 or 7 million-ish?

6 million, but with the holidays sales it'll probably be up to 7 soon: https://www.ancestry.com/corporate/a.../company-facts

That was my first thought: more matches, hopefully sizable and helpful in bringing down those walls in my family tree.

I wonder if these sort of numbers will exhaust the supply of the old Illumina chips and hasten the use of the new Global Screening Array chip?

    I hope not.

Anyone know how many of these kits are from the UK? 7 million tests and I only have a handful of green leaf matches.

They don't seem to publicize that, but you might contact them and ask how many tests they've sold in the UK, they might be able to tell you.

We adoptees who are looking for our biological family all win with this surge in sales. A bigger database can only help an adoptee's search. I would not have discovered my paternal father's birth parents without the huge database at Ancestry.
