Mitchell - since you are having so much fun summarizing haplogroup R, here are two files that you should enjoying playing around with:

    http://www.rcasey.net/DNA/Temp/HG_R_...20170630A.xlsx

    http://www.rcasey.net/DNA/Temp/Haplo...20180125B.xlsx

Here are some facts associated with these two files:

    1) the first files is 67 or higher markers (but 68 to 111 markers are not included) - 54,100.
    2) the second file is 37 only markers - 45,400 (this is a new file).
    3) these pulls are from 5,200 projects (biased to European and R1b).
    4) the last pull was in May, 2017.
    5) the haplogroups are from the YSTR report and are only entered once when the tester reaches 37 or 67 markers.
    6) the 37 marker file does not have derived fields that manually have to be added - just raw FTDNA data.

On other sidenote, I have been using the FTDNA matching system as a L226 admin to find matches. I have already
increased the size of L226 by 15 % - the vast majority are private (project only) privacy settings. I am not nearly
complete with this data mining and fully expect that 20 to 30 % of testers are defaulting to private and are
not available in public projects. Based on this discovery, the current count is around 125,000 testers at 37
markers or higher for R1b. Then add another 20 % for projects that still have either the YSTR or YSNP report
private to their project - 150,000 is probably more realistic due to privacy settings. Then you need to add
testers that have never joined any projects and can not be found. And for each pull, I add 250 to 500 new
projects which always adds another one percent for each pull. So the above summaries are probably missing
50 % of haplogroup R testers and the percentage continues to grow with FTDNA's default for all new YSTR
    testers is private.

Everyone should really lobby for projects to change their report settings to public (Anyone) and if you notice
that individuals show up in the project that you belong to - but do not show in the public version, lobby them
to update their privacy settings to public. By the end of 2018, over 50 % of all R1b testers will not be accesssible
    to the general public.

My automated extraction program is now down again due to some change in my network or FTDNA servers. Does anyone know
of any new changes since May that FTDNA has implemented ? I also have not updated the code for the new YSNP format that only shows the first 25 testers. The error checking routines indicate that it is some kind of connection issue. The hppts check
still passes and that was a bear to update around two years ago. Also, my friendly local IP provider (now Spectrum) altered my
DNS servers around three years to add their advertising - I had to hard code known DNS servers for that network issue.

R-L226 has the following distribution of testers:

    Total members_____445
    Big Y_____________115 - 25.8 %
    111______________214 - 48.1 %
    67_______________382 - 85.8 %
    37_______________434 - 97.5 %

But these number are misleading, as my spreadsheet shows non-project members as well:

    Total members_____950
    Big Y_____________115 - 12.1 %
    111______________259 - 27.2 %
    67_______________648 - 68.2 %
    37_______________950 - 100 % - do not track 25 or lower

Starting in September, L226 changed their guidelines for joining R-L226 to being confirmed L226 by YSNP testing to being predicted L226 by YSTR signature. Since that time, we have proactively encouraged joining the project and during the last six months have increased the project size by 45 %. This has been done primarily via the FTDNA matching system and sending emails requesting testers to join. Less than five percent have been rejected (L226 is very isolated) and to my big surprise - over half were not in our spreadsheet (privacy setting to private -Project only or no project membership). So for predictable single signature haplogroup projects, you can probably double your project size via the FTDNA matching system as the number of "Project Only" testers (new FTDNA default), no project YSTR report or no major project being joined is extremely large (probably around 50 % of your testers). I still need to contact at least another 100 testers (second or third request for some). Also, as new testers join, new matches show up for these testers which is another surprise.

In February we removed ~35 members who shouldn't have been in the project, so that's why you don't see much growth for U152.

Once again you left out the monumentally important R1b-41-1123 Project, which has 34 members.

It's the quality, not the quantity, or as they say in Quantico, Virginia, whatever.

(I think they say, "It's the Quantico, not the Qualico", but that's not very helpful.)
