There are two time frames for YSNP prediction: 1) very old haplogroups which can be predicted at only 12 markers; 2) fairly recent haplogroups that occurred between 1,200 and 2,500 years ago. For the more recent haplogroups, 37 markers can rarely accurately predict YSNPs in the younger timeframe unless most of the mutations in the 67 marker signature occurred in the first 37 markers. But around 10 to 15 % could be predicted. Also, another 5 to 10 percent of the younger time frame can not be predicted with high accuracy with 67 markers due to convergence between haplogroups. This is not as common but does affect around 5 to 10 % of the younger haplogroups. Also, none of the YSNP predictors can be expected to predict all the 1000s of younger haplogroups, but the Nevgen list of haplogroups continues to include more and more of the smaller and more recent haplogroups. I also have a R-L21 SNP predictor tool - but this is limited to R-L21 haplogroups (but this technology can be used for any haplogroup).

Yes I did look into it. They have rather high 385ab values but the rest doesn’t stand out too much. What of the members with more characteristic 385ab values of 12-19 etc? Also middle eastern derived or “African” omotic J?

High DYS385 due to a recLOH event, high DYS390 characteristic of basal P58 clades, higher DYS439 and DYS448 = 19. This is how you recognize it in most low resolution studies. As for DYS385 = 12-19, these values alone can't really tell you anything because they're very common in many J1 clades, however I know which cluster you're talking about and it is also middle-eastern derived from Yemen most likely : J-P56. It is still unclear if it also came with semitic migrations from Yemen or if it's a bit more ancient but judging from its diversity and Yfull estimates, it happens to coincide with the semitic migrations better.
