Thread: Jewish Matches

    Question Jewish Matches

    Hello,

I match an east Mediterranean Jew on Gedmatch over 8cM.

I also match a 100% Sephardic/North African Jew on MyHeritage over 8cm too, but on a different chromosome.

Moreover, I've got several fully Ashkenazi matches on FTDNA and Gedmatch.

I made sure that the segments on which I match each one of these individuals are not identical by descent segments.

Finally, on Eurogenes JTest, I score around 9.82% "Ashkenazi".

Do you think I have an actual distant Jewish heritage ?

    Thank you !

I suspect some Sephardi ancestry is likely for you, but not necessarily as much as the algorithm suggests because Middle Eastern/North African populations are generally similar.

Ashkenazim usually have short paper trails, and prior to the Renaissance period, there were more Sephardim than Ashkenazim. So, quite likely many Ashkenazim will have genetic traces of Sephardi, and often have some low-level matches in Morocco.

OTOH Ashkenazi ancestry in a North African person is not likely, though I suppose it would have been possible during the French colonial period.

So do you think that those segments might "be" Sephardic and that the common ancestor with my Ashkenazi matches was a Sephardi who settled among Ashkenazim ?

Moroccans can score up to ~20% Iberian and ~8% Italian on MyHeritage (especially full northern Moroccans, and except southerns). I tested on FTDNA and my result there was : 13% Southeast Europe, 5% Iberian, 3% Asia Minor and the rest North African !

PS : I added Eurogenes K36 and Ethiohelix K10+French chromosome paintings

For reference my DNA Tribes results.

    I am 6/8 Polish, 1/8 Bulgarian, 1/8 Sephardic/Ashkenazi Jewish.

I was always told growing up that we had descended from Spanish Jews on maternal side I did not pay much attention to it, after my mother passed away I looked into it more took DNA test and showed I am Sephardic/Ashkenazi mix however I have shift towards Spain a lot more than most Slavic people. Some tests give me 2-4% North African (Berber)

Table 1 Continental Core: 6.1% North African and Middle Eastern

Table 2 Regional: 13.5% Iberian, 2.2% Sephardic Jewish, 1.8% Ashkenazi Jewish, 1.7% Other

Table 3 Population: 16.6% Galicia Spain

Yes, though because of endogamy the connection could be more distant than it seems.

I think you might be in the same situation as many who match people from ethnic groups with a small genepool (such as Ashkenazi/Sephardic Jews), where the main question is, do I share Jewish ancestry with them, or do we share non-Jewish ancestry? (to simplify it).

Have you looked at what matches you have in common with the Sephardic match via Myheritage? As my wife also match several Sephardic and Ashkenazi jews via Myheritage (I think she has some Sephardic ancestry), and the in common matches are usually very helpful in determining the likely direction of geneflow..
