Sorry, I was assuming that Gery was correct. But from Googling, second cousins are "fifth degree".

Yes that’s right. That does seem to be the convention for genealogy. But there are several conventions so several possible answers and it is good practice to explain the one that you are using.

I once tried to look up the meaning of ninth degree relatedness in a very old legal context and found several different interpretations.
All 32 3xgreat grandparents were Welsh. Two 6xgreat grandparents from England and a few Irish or English surnames before 1800. Paper trail shows several C11th to C14th Anglo-Norman lines and C11th Norse-Irish lines.

Martin Blythe said 7th degree were 6th cousins in the webinar. I'll be the first to admit I don't know how degrees are determined, but I would expect Martin Blythe, a biometrician Living DNA describes as their "principle scientist" to know this. This is a link to the moment in the webinar he says this.

Yes he got it wrong when he answered a question. Then he corrected himself.

Yesterday's webinar was the final straw. If they can't get people to match their own kits what does it matter how many degrees they claim, or where cousins are on that degree chart. I went into my Living DNA account and opted out of Family Networks, as well as all sharing with partners. Whatever results they finally come up with, they'll have to do it without my data. They don't deserve any more of my time or interest.

Still no matches. To put it bluntly it's an overhyped pile of crap.
