T mtdna is common in punjabis from what I've seen. But it's a different branch among Punjabis. Since Brahmins are later migrants to other parts of India, and they came from north, it makes sense for him to have T mtdna.

Her Caucasian seems to be higher, but I think the most interesting difference lies in the different amounts of Mediterranean. I have 3 times as much as my mom which means my dad might have something like 6%-7% Mediterranean which seems kind of high. Does this seem about normal for Bengali Brahmin or could there be some kind of outside ancestry on my dad's side?
    Hi FrostAssassin,

Thanks for posting the results. Typically, your mum (and clearly yourself) score more NE Euro and much less E Asian compared to non brahmin Bengalis. But aside from the above, on the whole, they're not particularly different.

These are my family results below:

Component Reza Mother Reza Reza Father Reza Wife Reza Maternal Cousin
    S-Indian 44.46 46.82 49.86 45.66 44.54
    Baloch 30.28 28.95 27.88 29.64 32.46
    SE-Asian 6.21 5.75 5.22 8.5 6.2
    NE-Asian 4.94 6.66 5.13 2.56 5.47
    NE-Euro 3.88 5.08 4.02 4.61 0.01
    Caucasian 3 0.5 2.85 2.54 3.25
    Siberian 2.82 3.57 2.59 2.75 3.25
    SW-Asian 1.46 1.61 0 0.03 0.3
    Mediterranean 1.45 0 0 1.56 3.04
    Papuan 1 0.4 0.44 1.19 0
    American 0.25 0.38 0.86 0.96 1

Harappa world is an old admixture calculator. Trends can be picked up, useful as a comparative standard, but the actual components themselves are rather fluid, and more importantly, do not represent true ancestral populations.

Ie NE Euro to Med to possibly Caucasian (which in itself will be related to Baloch component) can blend into one another, and if you retested with a different platform, you would score differently for each. My family is an example of that.

On a key point, the calculator doesn't have clear differentiating components for the IA type ancestral population (probably Swat like) that mixed with the peripheral IVC like population, that probably moved into an AASI heavy population, with another group increasingly mixed with E Asian tribal like people, to form modern day Bengalis (plus extra E Asian in Bangladesh). And Brahmins migrating into Bengal would have mixed with the local population hence the generally similar profile.

So NE euro vs Med doesn't mean much when thinking of the ancestral populations. Some of the nmontes that are being run with the available ancient dna are historically probably more accurate, though they have their own limitations.

Incidentally some of my family come up as minor matches with you and your mother on gedmatch.

Relatively high NE Euro + Med and relatively low Baloch = Bengali Brahmin

My surname is Bhattacharyya. My mom's maiden name is Chowdhury. My dad's dad and my mom's dad both come from Mymensingh, while my mom's mom comes from Comilla. I don't really know where my dad's mom comes from.

I think you guys get classified as Barendra Brahmins in the internal geography of Bengal. My folks are Rarhi, but my maternal grandmother's mother's father was Bhattacharya from Brahminbaria also in present day Bangladesh. I think my grandma's brother is married to either Choudhury or Roychoudhary originally from Mymensingh as well. We might be related maritally at least.

Yeah, I know at least my mom's side are barendra brahmins. It's definitely possible that we are maritally related. My mom's dad sides were zamindars and apparently owned an indigo farm in the area. My grandfather also said one of my 3rd great grandparents had the title "diwan", but I don't really know what that means or entails lol.

Sorry for such winded connections. I think Bengali Brahmins have been having very very small families for generations now, like everyone I can track down vertically upwards and horizontally outwards seems to have been keeping it to 2 maybe 3 kids per generation going back last two hundred years, and this last generation is down to 1. But as a consequence of that we also keep track of a lot of relations going back to cousins that may be related to us through a 6-7 generations ago ancestor lol.
