    A British guy posted that:

Born in the UK. All of my family was born in the UK other than my grandfather who was born in Nepal. It looks like I got almost exactly a quarter of his DNA… pretty cool.
Seems like his grandfather was genetically a full Brahmin/Bahun given 23andme shows "25.1% Northern Indian & Pakistani" and 74.4% European, probably trace levels of Mongoloid (0.5%).

It isn't unlikely given Bahuns could become a British Gurkha soldier in those times by hiding their caste identity since Hindu castes like Brahmins /Bahuns and Kshatriya/ Chhetris (allowed only on few occasion) were forbidden in Gurkha regiments.

He posted his grandfather's photo in the comments. Must be a Hindu caste Gurkha.

No, J1 is my Dadi (Rayat). They are confirmed J1. Mom is confirmed J2a1 now based on multiple sembhi samples and her close relative.

Which community or caste does your maternal grandfather who is/was J2a1 belong to?

Is this y-haplogroup common in South Asia?

EDIT: No wonder he hasn't replied, he's too busy directing movies...
Managed to learn a bit more about him from Googling his name. This person's family background is "Mirza" and he's a native Urdu speaker/Muhajir from Pakistan. His DNA also overlaps with my brother's and he's predicted the same relationship with him as me. I don't know of anyone from Mirza qaum in my family though. So confusing. Not much to go on here, but does the East/Central Asian suggest any foreign admixture?

I think Mirza/Baig individual results are worth looking into, particularly on the Indian side of the border. Just from what I’ve read, these families can have ties to the Mughals and may have similar roots. Anecdotally, I’ve seen a few Hyderabadis with such roots with blue or hazel colored eyes. Wouldn’t be surprised if they had legit Central Asian ancestry

Thus the Indian-part of an Anglo-Indian from the "British Bengal" region isn't necessarily ethnic Bengali. Apart from large cities, there were/are significant Anglo-Indians in major hill stations of India.

Darjeeling district had/has quite a few Anglo-Indians, who were mostly part-Nepali speakers, notable being the kids from Kalimpong who were sent to New Zealand in the early 1900s. (https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/edu...dian-community). While staying in northern West Bengal, I've met a few Anglo-Indians who are mostly part Gorkhali, Rajbanshi and even part Tea Tribe. Also there are Khasis with British ancestry in Shillong, Meghalaya.

I don't think I've seen the results of an Indian "Mirza" posted here, admittedly I haven't looked very hard. Would be interesting to see for sure.

This guy's results and family background has really confounded things further for me since I initially thought he was a relative from my UP side, so I thought I had found the Y-DNA of my great-grandfather. Now I am not sure since that side claims to be Khanzada/Pathan and not Mirza.
