Have you already seen that high "Broadly" ?

    Hello everyone,

I was tested on September 2017 on 23andme with the V4 ship. My results were a bit surprising because I am mostly... Broadly!
I'm half French (my father) and half Italian/Russian (my mother), I'm really surprised that 23andme didn't read well my DNA I thought these ethnicities were easy to detect.

    My 23andme results ( at 50% level )* :

    European 98.9%

    Finnish 6.7%

    Italian 5.3%

    Eastern European 5.1%

    French & German 5%

    British & Irish 2.5%

    Scandinavian 2%

    Sardinian 0.9%

    Iberian 0.6%

    Balkan 0.6%

    Broadly Northwestern European 31.4%

    Broadly Southern European 23.8%

    Broadly European 15.1%

Western Asian & North African 0.9%

    North African & Arabian 0.7%

Broadly Western Asian & North African 0.1%

East Asian & Native American 0.1%

    Native American 0.1%

    Unassigned 0.2%

In total I'm 70.3% Broadly and I think that's really high... I'm really curious I'd like to know if there are people in my situation.

    Which confidence level is that?

I tested on the V5 chip this year. They gave me five different confidence levels to view my results at...

At 50% speculative confidence level, my "Broadly" results are:

    11.3% Broadly Northwestern European
    3.1% Broadly Southern European
    8.1% Broadly European
    0.1% Broadly Sub-Saharan African
0.1% Boadly Western Asian & North African

But at 90% conservative confidence level, they change to:

    19.2% Broadly Northwestern European
    65.1% Broadly European
    0.1% Broadly Sub-Saharan African
Ancestry paper trail tally: 21.1% Colonial American (British Isles, German, Dutch, Swiss, French), 14.1% not traced past 19th Century United States (MD, NJ, NY, PA, VA), 7.8% Canadian (Ontario & Quebec), 40.6% German, 15.6% Czech, 0.8% British & Irish

Dang. That *is* a lot of "Broadly" for 50% speculative!
Ancestry paper trail tally: 21.1% Colonial American (British Isles, German, Dutch, Swiss, French), 14.1% not traced past 19th Century United States (MD, NJ, NY, PA, VA), 7.8% Canadian (Ontario & Quebec), 40.6% German, 15.6% Czech, 0.8% British & Irish

My family get around 20-30% on speculative and 60-90% on conservative, divided into several broadly categories..

I think most Europeans tested on 23andme usually have around 10-30% Broadly at 50% level. I've seen many people from Northern Europe with high Broadly NW. But I've never seen anyone with my results with 70.3% Broadly at 50% level.

My highest score in one single category is 6.7 Finnish, I have no result that exceeds 10% that's really curious...

That seems somewhat high, although even with testing on v2/v3 I have 24.2% Broadly Northwest European at 50% confidence. I don't have nearly so much Southern European to classify, of course, "broadly" or otherwise. (Although I believe my number in this category is too low.)

This is the complete breakdown at 50%:

    European - 97.9%
    • British & Irish - 43.4%
    • French & German - 22.6%
    • Iberian - 1.9%
    • Italian - 0.8%
    • Finnish - 0.4%
    • Broadly Northwestern European - 24.2%
    • Broadly Southern European - 2.3%
    • Broadly European - 2.3%

    East Asian & Native American - 2.0%
    • Native American - 2.0%
    • Broadly East Asian & Native American - 0.1%

    Unassigned - 0.1%

And, I do have one tested and linked parent.

Besides British-German-Catalan, ancestry includes smaller amounts of French, Irish, Swiss, Choctaw & another NA tribe, possibly Catawba. Avatar picture is: my father, his father, & his father's father; baby is my eldest brother.

I was curious to see how my father's numbers compare. Unlike me, he does not have a tested and linked parent.

    European - 100%
    • British & Irish - 45.0%
    • French & German - 20.5%
    • Italian - 1.5%
    • Eastern European - 0.6%
    • Balkan - 0.5%
    • Scandinavian - 0.4%
    • Finnish - 0.4%
    • Broadly Northwestern European - 26.5%
    • Broadly Southern European - 3.7%
    • Broadly European - 0.9%

So a little over a quarter of his ancestry is "broadly Northwestern European" at 50% confidence. That number goes up to just under half at 90% confidence, and an addition 41% is simply "broadly European". At this confidence level, the only thing Ancestry Composition is willing to be more specific about is 9.1% "British & Irish".
Besides British-German-Catalan, ancestry includes smaller amounts of French, Irish, Swiss, Choctaw & another NA tribe, possibly Catawba. Avatar picture is: my father, his father, & his father's father; baby is my eldest brother.

Yeah, that seems really high. At 50% mine is 19.3% Broadly NW, 2.3% Broadly South, 0.2% Broadly European. The rest is specific.
