My Haplogroup is I-M253 with subclade I-F2642, and Sub-subclade I-DF29

Dear Friends,

I was just contacted by 23andme advising me of my newly revised Haplogroup, namely: I-M253 with subclade I-F2642, and Sub-subclade I-DF29.

I am very interested in contacting anybody else with one (or both) of these subclade numbers. My family is Danish, and my oldest confirmed male ancestor was born in about 1716-1718. My original surname was spelled Bluethmann, later changed to Blytmann, when the family moved to Denmark in 1738.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Your haplogroup is I-F2642, I-DF29 is simply the branch of I-M253 that you descend from. If we look at the I-M253 tree on YFull we can see the various branches that descend from I-M253 with DF29 being one of the largest ones, from there your line follows various other mutations, where we finally land at I-F2642 (aka I-S2169). If we look at the top of this webpage I have linked we can see the that F2642 descends from M253 as follows:

I-M253>DF29>Z58>Z59>CTS8647>Z60>Z140>Z141>F2642

If are interested you can take further tests such as Big Y-500 or a FullGenomes Y-DNA test or various tests at YSEQ to determine which descending branch of F2642 you belong to.

My haplogroup is a descending branch of I-F2642 as well, my oldest paternal ancestor immigrated from Scotland to Canada sometime in the 1800s.

I’m still listed as I-M253 on 23andMe even though I’m downstream of I-Z58 like you. It would be interesting if they offered free subclade updates for all of their customers.

It depends on which version of the chip that your 23andme test was read on. The V5 test has a chip that tests quite a few more SNPs (about 60) under I1 compared to the earlier V4 test, which only tests 4 SNPs below I1. The V5 chip was introduced in August 2017, so if your test was earlier than that, you'll stay at I-M253. This is the case for me as well, but not really that bothered as I don't really consider 23andme's Y test as anything more than a basic haplogroup check. Most of the Y-SNPs on the V5 chip are more than 3000 years in the past.

Thanks for the response! I am V4 and already know a much deeper subclade through FTDNA SNP testing. However, this gives me more reasons to recommend 23andMe to others over Ancestry or Living DNA.

This might be of particular interest to you, an ancient sample of I-F2642 was discovered in Iceland, this man was seemingly of ~75% "Gaelic" and 25% Norse origin.
