    If you start from the end of Charlemagne, the "expansion" of France and "disappearance" of Burgundy are just the reassembling of bits of France.
    The readjustment did not stop until the end of WWII.

    Technically Portugal wasn't a part of Spain in 1580-1640, we had the same king, but the country still had a bit of freedom. At least during the reign of Phillip II (whose mother was Portuguese and why he got a claim to the throne). It was only when Spanish nobles started to get influence on our national affairs - and taxes - that the a new king was acclaimed in December 1st 1640
