    Wink South Asian genetics misconceptions

Always wanted to make this thread. What are some misconceptions or assumptions that you often hear? Let's keep it respectful and civilized.

I'll think of some when they come up into my mind.

I've been waiting for this too.

One of the biggest that I hear that gets thrown around a lot is this idea that "Pakistanis" and "north Indians"(not just Muslims) are heavily admixed with Persians, Arabs, Central Asians, and basically any group that is even marginally connected to South Asian history.

Another is that South Indians, or Indians generally speaking are closely related to Australian aborigines. Another very common belief that unfortunately is prevalent even in anthro forums.

There are a lot of others I can think of but I will let others go before me.

I posted in the other thread, gugga pir is still worshipped. They call his temple "Marhi".

On topic: I hear this a lot that the only reason south Indians are darker than north Indians is because of equator else they're exactly same.

    Some more:

    -Aryans came from Iran
-No Muslims in South Asia have foreign ancestry(a claim repeated by Hindu nationalists)
    -No genetic differences between castes
-People of western Pakistan are basically Middle Eastern
-Idea that Indo-Aryan and Dravidian are "distinct" racial/genetic categories

I have heard some Indians tell me that I am a product of invaders. Firstly, I have no recent foreign blood, secondly what do I care how enthnogenesis of my people happened before the Iron Age.

Other is some Indian muslim families I have known claim that their ancestor came to spread Islam to South Asia. Even when that is true it is a few people out of hundreds. They even have family trees going to up 3-400 years. I really don't know what the validity of such claims is. Mostly, I think it's for social status.

Third one is some Indian folks telling me that we are the same genetically and have adapted to living in a warmer climate.

There are probably still past and current forum members who still believe some of those.

My cousin actually just got back from a trip to Jalandhar for a cousin’s wedding. She noted that some of her observations of the people there were in line with my descriptions of the genetics. To give some perspective, the Doab region has the highest percentage of Dalits (chamars and Chura) in all of Indian Punjab.

I believed it yes, but I would never say firmly. Otherwise I would not have asked questions. Either way I no longer think that nor do I have any strong opinions about that area.

LOL. It's always the same story isn't it. What's funny is my elders can't even pinpoint which country this supposed west Asian ancestor came from!
