    Confusion surrounding shared matches

I have a third great Uncle who immigrated to Pennsylvania. I have about 20 matches from this man.

Anyway, what I canít get my head around is the shared matches. Often, I will get a match and it will list some of these people as shared matches but not all of them.

If they are all descended from the one man, then why are they all not appearing?

    I am confused.

The shared matches that appear are 4th to 6th or closer to you and the match. 5th to 8th cousins don't appear in shared matches. Shared matches don't appear if a shared match is a 4th to 6th cousin to you but a 5th to 8th cousin to the match.

    Exactly.

I'm having issues with this right now, since I'm trying to figure out how I'm related to a particular match. She has shared matches I don't, since they are not closely-enough related to me so as to show up (showing as for her likely 3rd cousin, but for me 5th-8th, for example). From them she can see what side of the family we are related on, but I would never have been able to tell using shared match.

Even when I compare my and my sister's shared matches to a particular person they are different, since we have quite varying amounts of cM/predicted relationships, and some shared matches (matches we both have) will show up for her but not for me, or vice versa.

With distant matches, one frequently has multiple lines to the common ancestry. The lines are not IBD, but the ancestor's DNA is reconstructed by the combination of contributions from each line. You could have lines through both parents. It's not worth worrying about.

It looks like I share several links with this woman as it is 4 segments. But it could be old ancestry

Aside from the fact that you may have inherited different DNA than them, sometimes Ancestry just does funky things with matches. I have many cases where matches B and C will show on match A's profile, but not visaversa.
