Changing the way we think about Cyprus genetically is necessary. Here's why.

We are so used to thinking of Cypriots as 'Hellenized Levantines' and as 'Middle Easterners who speak Greek' but on a genetic basis, Cyprus is roughly intermediate between South Italy/Sicily/Aegean islands and the Levant, and rather seem to be the easternmost plotting people in the South Italy/South Aegean genetic spectrum, meaning they are not Levantines themselves.

They are basically like Sicilians/Cretans/Calabrians/Dodecanese with more Levantine input and less North European, essentially the southernmost extreme end of the South Italian/Aegean islander spectrum. South Italians and Aegean islanders already have more Levantine input than mainland Greeks or Central Italians, so just add a bit more and you get Cyprus.

This is shown in Sarno et al in the PCA plot:

And it is shown on here, where some of "South Italy" (Calabrians) plot with Cypriots, closer than the West Asians do.

And on GEDmatch we see a roughly equidistant mix of Aegean islanders, Sicilians, South Italians, and West Asians in their top 20.

This thought is clearly out dated as I was saying for a while now - it was the source for a lot of problems in the earlier days of population genetics around Levantine admixture, when Cypriots were being constantly considered as Levantine.

Luckily, this trend had seem to stop in the last several years and few important studies I've seen, seem to exclude Cypriots as Levantine reference population.

Cypriots are clearly a three way mix of Aegean Greeks, Anatolian Greeks and Levantines, with emphasis on the former two.

There's also a clear cline from Cyprus to Crete going through the Dodecanese. Sure, they are the most Levantine admixed Aegean Greeks, but genetically - they are members of the East Mediterranean Continuum mentioned in the Sarno et al. study. It's also worth mentioning the Heraclides et al. study (2017) which had found that uniparentally speaking, Cypriots are very close to Calabrian Italians, and the reason for this is mutual substantial Hellenic admixture.

On an autosomal level this is also due to mutual Levantine admixture which is not present in other Greek populations as much as in Cyprus or in Calabria.

My experience seems to be that Cretans and Sicilians plot closely to one another, while Calabrians and Dodecanese plot closely to one another, with them having less "Northern" admixture than Crete/Sicily and thus filling the gap with Cypriots. Do you agree with this?

If you see one of my charts above, the Cypriots do overlap with a subset of what is labeled "South Italy" which I presume to be Calabrians.

Sikeliot, as we've been through such debates for the last several months, I know where you're going with this.

Yes, obviously the Levantine admixture exist in both Calabrians and Cypriots. But surely, it isn't the main reason why they show affinity to each other, because they have substantially different amount of this ancestry, and they share non-Levantine uniparental similarities as established in Heraclides et al.

They both have substantial mutual Hellnic admixture, with also mutual varying degree of Levantine admixture. If I'll have to grossly estimate, let's say they are both +50% Hellenic, and then Calabrians are probably 10-20% Levantine, and Cypriots are up to 40% Levantine.

Keep in mind Calabrians also have North African admixture which they share with Sicilians, which Cretans and Cypriots do not have, yet that doesn't plot them away from each other. Same way, the minor Levantine admixture in Cretans and Calabrians is not the main reason why they plot together. It helps and indeed cause them to plot closer together - but no the main reason. And before you'll start using mainland Greeks as an example that without the Levantine admixture Greeks would plot so close to South Italians - keep in mind mainland Greeks have much more Slavic-like admixture than Aegean Greeks, I'd argue enough to plot them away even from Aegean Greeks let alone Calabrians.

North African in Calabria/Sicily is why Cretans on MDLP K23 are slightly closer to Cypriots than South Italians are even though the difference is very marginal.

A few points to make about this. If you consider the PCA plots above where Cypriots and Calabrians can plot close together, then it stands to reason there either must be SOME Calabrians who have more Levantine than the average or Cypriots who have less than the average which means it is not the difference of 20% Levantine versus 40% all the time. Maybe some of each group have 30%.

Secondly, the point I have made is because of the Levantine admixture, even if you removed all Slavic input from Greece, they will not plot like Sicilians/Calabrians, Cretans/Dodecanese, and especially not like Cypriots. We have no "pure" pre-Slavic, pre-Levantine Greeks as a proxy but Maniots, Cyclades, or some North Aegeans might be the closest and even then, they do not plot exactly like the groups mentioned.

My point is that both Greek and Levantine admixture together create the so-called "East Mediterranean" continuum, because without the Levantine input, there is no continuum at all, there would be a sharp division between SE Europe and the Levant with no groups bridging the gap.

I highly doubt there are any Italians who are 30% Levantine. Remember, you don't need Natufian-rich populations to shift groups toward the Near East. Caucasus and Iranian ancestry also have the effect of pulling populations toward West Asia. In fact, that's why the Minoans and Mycenaeans plot closer to West Asia than any other old European population does. This Middle Eastern shift (probably mostly from CHGs but maybe also Iran Neolithic) is what distinguishes "old East Mediterraneans" (Minoans, Mycenaeans, Peloponnese Neolithic outliers) from the more WHG-rich Neolithic Europeans of the old West Med. There maybe even have been an "Old Mediterranean" continuum (i.e., a Neolithic European cline) in the past which linked these EEF-rich groups together from Iberia to Anatolia. The cumulative effects of ANE-rich migrations into Southern Europe over the millennia (from steppe-rich groups and/or historical West Asians) have shifted this potential continuum "north" into what is now the modern Mediterranean cline; only the Sardinians were spared.

Non-Salerno Grikos might be closer still, notwithstanding that they also have Levantine admixture. If you look at that Sarno PCA, you can see that the average GAL and BOV Grikos are plotted above even the Sicilians, pulling toward the "Old East Mediterranean" zone where the Mycenaeans would plot. If we had such Grikos in the G25, I have little doubt they'd be the closest living population to Mycenaeans (and therefore, presumably, to classical Balkan Greeks).

Without the Turkic migrations, you'd probably have see another bridge connecting SE Europe to the Caucasus. So historical events have both created bridges as well as obscured them, at least in my opinion.

I think we're severely underestimating the Anatolian influence on Cyprus' demographic past which is bound to go all the way back to the Bronze Age.

Absolutely agree with you on this, Cyprus has a high percentage of J2a, its the highest after the Caucasus besides some regions, and their J2a and J2b are quite different than Greeks in general, apart from Anatolian Greek groups, they have a nice variance of J2 like Italy and Turkey.

Also let me be clear, I think Greek admixture predominates in all Aegean islands and southern Italians. I am simply saying that if we are going to emphasize the "East Med" continuum, it is the varying degrees of Levantine input from Abruzzo to Cyprus that created that continuum otherwise everyone would basically be pure pre-Slavic, pre-Levantine Greeks.
