Can anyone here answer how accurately should 23andMe Neanderthal counts be taken into account across large population clusters like Europeans and East Asians? And if the 23andme SNP arrays properly account for variants found in those populations or is there a European allele emphasis?

My guess is, based off of Vernot and Akey 2014 Neanderthal “tag SNPs” (EAS:132405, EUR:132296, SAS:179662) and the low scores I see for South Asians in my matches , that it is not accurate in that sense (though it may also less plausibly be because my ethnic group has lower Neanderthal SNPs). As well in Wong et. al 2014 and Wall et. al 2013, South Asians have intermediate Neanderthal % admixture between Europeans and East Asians.

I recently requested that 23andme remove my data, so I can't go and check my results, but if I remember correctly mine was 277 variants

I remember back when I first did 23andme, I was just so focused on the ancestry I didn't bother looking at my Neanderthal results, I eventually got to it and was like "oh my god, 277? That's a lot!" then I realized people had way more like 300+ variants

It's not that little either, at the moment 277 is "more Neanderthal variants than 53% of 23andMe customers", although SW Euros generally have less than NW ones, and there are plenty of testers whose ethnic background has overwhelmingly less variants, like African Americans, so they skew the average down. So 277 might be relatively high for me, but low for you
    My missus only got 244
