Moving for a while away from my mysterious Amerindian great-great-grandparent, I also wonder about the "French connection".

Again, no French people in my family - but 50% Northern Italians from the Veneto, Trento and Lombardy regions.

Can it be that AncestryDNA is putting all those people into their "France" region?

Think of these as regions, not countries. If you have any ancestry from a state along the Rhine, "France" as a region showing up is not surprising. Also, there was a lot of Walloon migration into western Germany after the Thirty Years War.

Yes. I am part Northern Italian and very often score french or Spanish instead of Italian.
Some Italians are closer to Frenchmen than other Italians.

I have one grandparent from Bologna. On AncestryDNA, I am 1% Italian. The LivingDNA test shows 20.9%.

Don't worry about that mate. I am 3.6% Italian on 23andme and i have an Italian grandfather and a half italian grandmother.

Livingdna give me 20% Tuscan + 17% Germanic( Central Europe + Alps) that makes much more sense.

So would you recommend to me a 2nd test, like LivingDNA or MyHeritage?

If you thought Ancestry's results look strange, prepare to be bowled over by inconsistensies with LivingDNA

At some point they will finish their German study (and hopefully re-calculate for their customers) but right now it may be half-baked for Germans.

Edit: On the other hand, maybe you can be part of the recalibration for them:

If ancestry/ethnicity is your main interest, then a second test might be a decent idea, but neither of those (both are unreliable, and LivingDNA works best currently for people of mainly English ancestry). I'd do 23andMe.

I'd do the free Gedmatch upload and calculators first, however.

I 2nd the 23andme test. Very accurate results for me; when I say very, though, I mean relative to all the others. 23andme still an uncertainty of at least +/- 1-3% for each sub-region in europe.
With the GEDMATCh tests, go for it but be careful and don't take the results too seriously. Those calculators are extraordinarily out of date in this fast-changing branch of science, and I think actually measure quite different regions from today's socio-political countries.

Thanks for the suggestions concerning 23&me, I'll definitely consider it.
My interest is dual, (deep) ancestry and genealogical matches. So I guess I'll have to take more tests.
GEDMatch doesn't give me any useful matches, though.
Anyway, I notice I still have a lot to learn, and I'll do that.
I know it's off place but just a quick one, is DNA.Land a safe site to upload your data to?
