MASSIVE 23andMe update for South Asians!

They also now have a CENTRAL ASIAN category which is conjoined with South Asian. This is a very major development for South Asians, they've also updated the reports in general for everyone (changed %'s)

We both basically had slight gains in Middle Eastern, slight loss of South Asian. I'll post in the 23andme results thread.

23&Me Beta update - Central/South Asian breakdown

Guys it says I'm 0.8% Malayali..lol..
I get 30% "broadly" categories.

Non South & Central Asian categories did change, I got -
European & Melanesian as new categories
East Asian & Native American decreased 0.1%
African went up overall including existing Ethiopian (East) & Senegambian (West), got new countries w/ Nigeria, Sudan & Broadly NE Africa.
My Western Asian changed to "Broadly Western Asian & North African" & went up 0.1%

It put me as nearly 100% Tamil,Telugu, Sri Lankan. In other words, garbage.

We'd need to know how they made these divisions..it has to be affected by the amount of data they have. And 23andMe is probably trying to base it on modern populations & not necessarily at the granularity of some gedmatch components. Stands to reason people in neighbouring geographical regions/states are probably close enough to each other (across caste & religious lines) than to other parts of the country and maybe 23andMe just has more data on Malayalis, Patels and South Indians to split them into more categories than the huge North Indian & Pakistani category. I'm guessing they'll gradually split the northern portions into central, central-east (Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal), central-west (Maharashtra, Goa, parts of Gujarat), North & North-West categories.
